A question about beds..(forgive my ignorance)
#1
1.Are the ones with the bit under the mattress (divans)more comfortble than the ones that come with a frame and then a mattress on top?
2.Are there diff sort of mattresses or is it just a case of soft/medium/hard?
Anyone recommend a good mattress ?
Cheers
Paul...

Are you serious?
The frame/devan type bit doesn't make any difference to the comfort - all you are looking for here is a firm, flat surface to put the mattress on. Ideally it won't squeak too much with a bit of rockin and rolling.
Matresses are made out of different stuff:
Futon - made out of small lumps of rock
Sprung - made out of bits of old coathanger (a good one of these can be quite comfortable)
Foam - made out of used contraceptives.
I have recently got a Tempur mattress - it falls into the "made out of used contraceptives" category. It is pretty much the b*ll*cks, the material moulds itself to your shape.

1. Yes.
2. Yes. Cheap ones will have synthetic filling, expensive ones will have natural filling, such as horse hair etc.
Two rules;
1. Buy the most expensive bed you can afford. You spend 1/3rd of your life there, and a decent one will outlast 2, 3 or more cheap ones.
2. Don't buy a bed that's too hard. It's a myth that this is beneficial.

u wanna try a rubber matress
kipped at me mates on weekend and he has one of these....very comfartable
if you really wanna splash out, selfridges have a bed section, i think it's the london bed company, and they some mad one's that when pressed down and u let go it returns to the normal shape, like a foamy type / rubbery material!!!

A pocket sprung mattress will usually be the most expensive. But it's personal preference - try half a dozen in a local bed shop. I'd never buy a mattress from somewhere like Argos where you can't easily test it.
You can have more springing in a divan (assuming the bottom section isn't empty for drawers) but a mattress designed for a frame bed should take account it's doing all the work.

What i mean is something like this is a mattress and a solid frame
Something like this is a mattress and a sprung support underneath.
So the bottom one should be more comfotable cos of the extra springs?
Tel,when you say spend the most you can,...on the bed? or do you mean on the mattress?
Lastly,is the one with the pine frame more likely to be noisy,ie creak etc?
Like i said,i know nowt about beds.

A good mattress is the best investment. Obviously you need a good support for said article though!
I have a pine bed and a mattress about a foot thick and when I *can* sleep, it is very, very comfortable.
As for squeaking...well...the *bed* never squeaked even at certain times and believe me it would have if it could.
Depends how well screwed...together the bed is.

The mattress is the most important part. At one time I used to have a mattress lying on top of a pallet with a blanket over it - worked absolutely fine. The tempur mattresses are pretty dear but they are not supposed to wear out. The last pocket sprung mattress that we had was getting a bit shabby after 6 years; the stiching was coming undone and stuff. I blame the missus for exceeding its safe working load.

I invested in a waterbed last year and it was the best money I have spent. I have a dislocated sacroiliac in my back/hip and it has eased it no end.

SS, if you're buying a divan, they'll come as a set. Don't mix and match lower sections and mattresses. If the mattress needs replacing, replace the whole thing.
If you're looking at a solid frame, then it's not quite so critical, so long as the frame is rigid, and doesn't flex under the weight of a mattress and person/people.
One thing i forgot to mention, make sure you get pocketed springs. The more the better. Again, this will be reflected in the price.
