Me and my fella had a scoob but had to get rid for financial reasons. I've been driving round in an M reg Cav 1.8 auto since we sold it and my other half has had a sierra. He now wants another car (fair enough, not got a prob with that) but he's looking at turbo's, GTI's, BMW's and Mercs. Wouldn't be a prob under normal circumstances but he's 24, got no no claims bonus and an accident on his record so insurance is stupid. Also all the cars he's looking at are about an F reg (which is all we can realistically afford!)
It's driving me insane that he can't just get a small engined cheap to run, insure and fix, car for a couple of years until he's got a few more no claims.
How can I convince him to stop being a tw*t and listen to me?! This is putting major strain on out relationship.
BTW, I can understand where he's coming from, he wants a nice car BUT, I had a few bangers before I had enough no claims to get a decent car!!!!

It's the "got to have it now!!" mentality that most young men seem to have these days. Take Avi for example, still insured under his mum's name at 22! and no plans for changing it either. *snigger*

For many guys cars are a way of expressing ourselves, its an extension of our personality i guess.
We could say the same about you,ie what is it with women and decorating, why do you have to do it more than once every 10 years...

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that all he need the car for is to travel to and from work (4 mile round trip!).

Best thing is to get him to look at something that has been done up to look the part, not tacky, you understand, but is a base model really. Or do things to one yourselves. I'm not talking "Max Power" here, you understand? Then he can be proud driving it around, as only a very few will spot it for what it is, and he'll build up no-claims while he has it.
It's what I did with a "Rally modded" Mk1 1100 Escort, before moving onto a Mexico! Even the garage guy who helped me "mod" it couldn't believe it was still only 1100 under it's outer skin. The only thing I touched was interior, rally lights, bigger wheels etc, and tweaked the suspension to make it roll less.
Ready-modded cars are out there, as are ones you could do bits to yourselves....they just need finding.
Best of luck.

I think I know what his prob is...... He was gonna get a mini and mod that! I was happy with that cause they make me laugh, they are like go carts, cheap to fix and cheap on insurance even with modifications!! Anyway, his older brother (who is 33) has got a Jag (old one!!) and now his mate is cruising around in one too(god knows why!!), so he's now wanting to keep up with them. Pathetic really.

Whose money will he be spending? Do you each have your own accounts with a joint one for household or is it just one big pot?
If it's his money, let him spend it!
If it's joint money, suggest a separate account so that you can pay your half of stuff.
If it's causing rifts, let him do it. Is your relationship worth breaking up over a car? You managed to get rid of the Scoob when you realised that you couldn't afford it and tbh, unless he gets it out of his system there will always be an underlying "I can't do what I want".
Let him buy the car.

And before anyone gets the wrong idea, I *am* female and this is what I have done before with a boyfriend. People like making up their own minds and while I'm sure Red_Dog has tried (and failed) to convince him otherwise, it hasn't worked and is now causing a rift.

It's not the car, it's the insurance and cost of repairs! He can't get insured on a golf GTI or any BMW's, he had an XR2 and insurance was 800 TPFT, now he's had the accident it's more, he don't want a Cav, I can't win!!!

Are you cross because of the money he will be spending or because he wants a decent car again (albeit older) and you've got an M reg Cav?
Just curious because what I am reading here sounds as though you're jealous, to be honest...

If the money's that much of an issue, I take it you've drawn up a list of what you have coming in V what you have going out, to show you spare money.
If he really can't afford the insurance, that will put him off, unless he's blindly expecting you to sub him...?

£800 on a dog yet you can't afford to run a scoob???
I think you should make a list of all outgoings to show where the money will not be available.
Two cars are not really a necessity if he's only doing 4 miles per day - why doesn't he walk?

I think you should tell the bloke to sort his f***ing act out. Can't he work out a budget himself? At his age I was pleased enough to drive about in a clapped out Fiat Tipo. (That was only 5 years ago btw )

Cause Chris B his good points far outweigh his bad! He's still young and silly. I've been through that bit but I had a little more common sense than him!!
Anyway, his excuse now is that he wants me to have the BMW?! WTF?! I don't want one! I'd rather keep my Cav!

sorry, but if you give into him now, he'll just keep tapping you for the cash for more and more things. I remember on previous posts he wanted to try for a baby - by the sounds of it, he still is one himself. Where is it going to end - you in court for non-payment of bills etc because he just 'had to have the BMW your honour'?

Don't think he would mind looking like a drug dealer! Our Scoob was a proper drug dealing pimp wagon!!! (perhaps why the police kept pulling us!) Anyway, after a proper 'think' and me giving a piece of my mind followed by the silent treatment, he's decided that I was right. Fingers crossed we can get him a decent car for a decent price in the near future (before he changes his mind again!!)
