Variable speed limits. Are you the chump...?
#1
When driving on motorways/dual carriageways are you left feeling a complete chump when you get somewhere near observing the variable speed limits (the ones which say in lights 50mph for example when there is an accident)? I usually drop down to 55 or 60, cars steam past and usually the speed limit goes back up without any obvious cause of why it should have dropped down in the first place!!!!
It leaves me feeling like a chump.

If you are talking the boards on motorways other than M25 they are advisory speedlimits. Just be aware that everything might come to a halt shortly hehe...
Shame some people couldnt work that out this morning on the M5. There was an accident ahead (said on the radio) and the 50 signs were out. The next thing you know some idiots have driven up each other's *****... Result = 1hr tailbacks..

Speed limits are only "enforcable" when presented in a red circle. These ones on the motorway (EXCEPT M25) are advice only, but the police can and do stop people for ignoring them... After all, if you ignore them, then you could be driving without due care?
I normally slow down and move into the inside lane. I hate people emergency-stopping on the M1 in front or behind me, which normally happens a while after these things start...

If people stream past me I don't really care - it's their licence and I need mine to stay intact for the amount of commuting round the variable limit of the M25. What really makes me laugh is that the limit sign says 40 and I'm struggling to do 15!!!!

Andy Porter - add 20mph to what you see...????
I take it you don't have a radar detector? The cameras on the M25 are only ever turned on (well, usually) when there's a temporary speed restriction in force. Adding 20mph will definitely get you a brown envelope, so in my opinion that's ridiculous advice.
