There's not really any such thing as a 'value for money' (read 'cheap') radar / speed camera detector. You very much get what you pay for.
If you buy a cheap one, it won't work very well and you'll waste your cash.
Try and find a good one, second hand, on Ebay or something.
Ideally you'll need both a good radar / laser detector, and a GPS based device for the passive SPECs cameras.
I have, and can recommend, both the Bel 550 detector (350 is nearly as good, and cheaper) and the Road Angel GPS. Having both still won't mean that you're invincible, and certainly slows me down when around camera sites and accident blackspots - but it evens up the playing field a bit......
