Hi Tory,
I just bought a panasonic camcorder yesterday. Lovely piece of kit it is too.
I got some DV transfer software and USB lead in the box, but this is only for transferring still images. USB does not have the bandwidth required for transferring the DV footage. For that you will need to go with either Firewire or (seemingly very rare on digicams) USB2. Both are about the same transfer speeds. I'll be buying myself a PCI Firewire card from www.scan.co.uk or similar. They're only about £15-20 for a cheapy. Or try www.ebuyer.co.uk.
Maximum transfer rates are roughly as below to give you an idea...
USB 12Mbit/s
USB2 480Mb/s, Firewire something similar.
Buying a USB2 card does not necessarily make USB1 devices any quicker. Unless the device (Camcorder) is USB2 capable you'll still be transferring at the same old speed even through a USB2 connection...
hope this helps
