Try cleaning the door seals and surrounds - it might be that the door is "shut enough" to activate the motor and light, but not enough to operate the magnetron.
Only a guess, but cheaper to check than shelling out on a new one!

This may be an urban myth but here goes
A bloke had a burger van type thing, installed a couplle of microwaves but had a problem witrh not being able to open the doors due to a lack of space, this became a pain working around them.
He took the doors off and jury rigged the door switches so they would still work, after a few days was taken into hospital to find he had nuked his kidneys.
OUCH!

When you turn it on, about a second after the fan starts and the turntable starts going round you should hear a fairly faint metallic noise for about half a second. This is the magnetron thingy firing up, it's what heats up the food. If you can't hear it start up it's fcuked. Prolly cheapest to buy a new microwave in that case unless you've got one of the expensive ones.
Hope this helps.
