Coldplay over rated?

I agree - overrated.
Saw em, at Brixton Academy 2 years ago, and was underwhelmed. Uninspiring student-rock, when they get a bit older you won't tell the difference from Dire Straits.
......but they're loaded and laughing now!
edit to ask:
are white stripes any good or are they hype too?

I've just had another listen to their new(ish) LP, and I have to say, it's the most over rated record i've heard for a long time .
Despite 'In My Place' & 'The Scientist' being excellent tracks, the rest fails to impress me. Clocks is annoying more than anything else. I turn it off when it comes on the radio, and the others just seem to go on without a hell of a lot happening. I prefered their 1st LP, it didn't sound so forced and the lyrics were a little less cryptic; so you could take away more from the songs
Coldplay = Radiohead 2 Anyone else agree?

I don't see the correlation with Radiohead, personally.
Radiohead are more technical, and dare i say boring. The bends was brilliant (Joshua Tree, anyone?) and ok Computer on the lines of Pink Floyd.
Coldplay are, as said above more ear-friendly. I saw them at The Royal Albert Hall a few weeks ago and they were awesome.
Still, we all have our opinions on good/bad tunes.

Dunno about overrated but definitely overplayed
Why does EVERY tv program, bit's between programs, music shops, non-music shops, pubs etc. etc. have to be playing the new album ALL the time!

Yes, but there is OTHER catchy stuff about.
I like the album but needn't of bought it since I get to hear it all the time. I'm bored of it now though.
Parachutes is the better album though (imo blah blah blah)

I prefer Parachutes too,but there's still some great tracks on ROBTH.Warning sign for example, and the title track.
Radiohead,i find they lack emotion in a lot of their stuff.
As for Coldplay being overplayed, they are the band of the moment...it always happens.

I'd say ROBTTH is OK, nowt mega, put it this way, I've just taken it out of my changer to make way for Madness Parachutes was deffo better
As for Radiohead, I just don't get why they even have a record contract...the should locked in a padded room, away from sharp object, ropes etc, they sound suicidal...they make me feel suicidal, bunch of monotone whineing dullards
Creep is OK I spose

I saw Coldplay live at the MEN in Manchester about three weeks ago and they were 100% top notch. Fantastic night.

Definitely not over-rated. Top class.
ROBTTH is a different album to Parachutes - I wasn't so keen on it at first. It takes a couple of listens before you get it into your head. But once it grabs you, it really grabs you.
If you ignore the pretentiousness and superiority complex of the band itself, and just listen to the music, you realise they're top quality. A sort of 'Crowded House meets R.E.M. meets World Party' IMO.

From everything I've read zoog, they've grown loads in the last two years. Heck, stuff I've read by people who saw them inside the last year and them saw them at the MEN thought they were so much better.
Christ Martin did Amsterdam at the end of the night pretty much as an acoustic track - stunning

As a grade VIII pianist from the age of 13 ,I am somewhat amused by the 3 chord crap that is wings. Not judging the band or it's success but it is a bit crazy when such a simple and mediocre song is a success. Perhaps I am wrong and modern songs can indeed be simple and stupid to entertain the masses, but I preferred simple and clever...
Off to write on my hand about this......

chopper - are you referring to Wings, as in err... Paul Maccas Wings?
If so, could you show me a 3 chord song? I seriously don't think you will find one.
Let me know.

Coldplay are excellent and not that well known out here in Australia. But I intend to change that, by going around with a mobile PA system and playing stuff like Coldplay and Travis - **** me, lots of Aussies have NEVER heard of Travis!!!!
It took me a while to get used to some of the songs on their new album, but I like them all.

Anyhow, when you get a band that soars as high as Coldplay are doing at the moment and so quickly, then of course there are going tobe people who love or hate them.......isn't this world of variety a great place?

Here's a trick for you.
Put on anything by David Gate's Bread (e.g. "Guitar Man").
Then anything by Coldplay.
Then try and spot the difference.
Alan McGee was right: it's music for bedwetters
