Yes it is legal, but your plate needs to be old enough to do it and they usually cost a lot.

Only legal on very old cars...not sure of wht year though..maybe 1960s....I used to have them on my car...got pulled by evry police car I passed! Never got prosecuted, but it just became so ridiculous that I changed them after a few days.

I think it's OK on very old cars (eg Model "T" Fords)
Not on your scooby though...Think the Police are pretty tolerant on bending the rules slightly on number plates if they are legable but I think they will spot that a mile off!!!

There is a black "carlsson" merc S class in manchester with black plates and silver letters, appears to be an "S" plate - highly illegal and makes me wonder how often he is stopped!

I assume it's the car that has to be old enough to qualify, not just the plate? (ie if you bought A1 etc you'd still have to use a current plate?)

I have white on black (Well silver on black actually) on my 1964 morris minor, but this is a 3 number 3 letter combination, so it is fine.

I had a 1971 GT6 with blck plates, it was technically illegal bcause it's ment to be pre 1971, but no copper was going to waist his time to find out.

Its got to be registered before 1973, so an "old-side" M plate or older. Co-incidently, this is also the cut-off date after which the fitment of musical air-horns is also prohibited. Not a lot of people know that

I got done for this.
Has black plates with white letters on my black 306rallye.
Some do-gooder called the police to report me allegedly speeding. They were waiting for me as I came off the dual carriageway.
As they couldn't do me on the strength of a phone call, they did me for my plates instead.
It was reported to the fiscal and a £70 fine was issued.

Saw one on a new Porker the other day, but the plate was '62666' or something (all digits)
Maybe some sort of diplomatic plates?

Pre 1973 cars can have black and silver plates by law, so early L platers are the last. Late L plates ( registered after 01-01-73 ) are illegal.

The car they're on has to be this old, having old plates on a new car does not mean it's legal to have black and silver 'plates.
