Duh. Gave myself 240volts AC of PowerGen's finest the other day .

Trying to fix a lamp that had fallen apart. I *thought* I had checked that it was switched off at the mains, but realised it wasn't when I suddenly felt my finger trying to oscillate at 50hrtz.

Oh well. Teach me for next time...

I was quite surprised that I got nothing worse than numb fingers...

EDIT I mean 240v at 50 htz... not 50 volts

Hello

I was *stupid* enough to touch a light socket and all I got was numb fingers. Just to clarify: I was fixing something and the bulb slipped out........

Apparently it depends on the shortest point of resistence, and as I was touching both parts it just went up one finger and down the other.

It's only when the current can't do that, that it travels through your body in order to earth itself.

Steve.

boxst,

I guess that's what happened. I had my finger across the contacts. Could have been worse I suppose. Won't try that again

It is the current that kills, but the higer the voltage the greater the chance of your heart taking enough current to stop it, assuming the source has enough "current" behind it.

I used to work with electrostatic spray guns - a small tip next to the nozzle has a 100 KV potential. As the paint ( powder or wet spray) comes out of the gun it passess through the field created by the high voltage -this charges the paint particles with a posetive charge.

The object you were painting was hung on a conveyor that was earthed. As the paint left the gun it is attracted to the negativley charged job and kind of wraps itself around it and gets in all the nooks and crannies - you could nearley paint a cylindrical object from one side.

We had a trick with these that never failed

When someone came into the room where we tested power packs -( also doubled as a locker room and mess room ) someone else would get them talking, while someone else pointed a gun at them from a couple of feet away. As long as the victim was wearing trainers and it was dry the victim got charged up to god knows what like a big capacitor.

Victim then touches locker or door handle....

CRACK ! - every time

Security systems etc as well as doing some sparking

What about you then Tim?

My father in law & brother in law work on the the National grid incoming supplies for a lot of big factory plants up north and so on, mainly incoming switchgear and the like, they also get shed loads to go and spike cables

EHV (11kv-132kv) cable jointer underground stuff For the MEB, GPU, Aquila or what ever we are called this week you lose track the with amount of different company’s that have owned us. We mainly do switchgear changes, transformer changes and mains diversions. I love spiking cables when people are walking past they think someone’s shooting a gun at them. My mate is into security lots of £££ to be made in that game, he always says if it wasn’t for thieves he would be out of a job.
