Probably best to buy a new one but it does depend where it's broken. If it's the join link that's gone, get a new one of those (only a couple of quid) and away you go.
Anywhere else, treat yourself to a new one.

If you can't fix it, and you have to buy a new chain, bear in mind if the drivetrain is old, then the new chain WILL slip on the old cassette and front chainrings, which you will also need to replace. If you can't be **** replacing that lot, and it can run into the ££££'s then try reducing the size of the chain by taking out the damaged links, and joining again where it's not damamged.
If you take it to your LBS, they will recommend a new chain, and then charge you again for all the other bits that I mentioned above!
Chris.
