Just to let you know. My mother has had cancer of various sorts over the last 13 years. Last summer she was diagnosed with lung cancer. Has spent the winter undergoing chemo and the tumours have regressed significantly. She now has not to go back for 3 months. Keep your hopes up as chemo nowadays has been a great help to her.

As Alas said - make sure you say the things you feel deep down. I am sure there are not many guys here who have told their Dad that they love him and they are grateful for everything he made them. I don't know you, but I feel sad for your father, you and your family. There are no words to make it easier, but first time I heard this song I made sure I told my Da the things I feel. Do it before you can't.

The Old Man
The tears have all been shed now.
We've said our last goodbyes.
His soul's been blessed,
He's laid to rest.
And it's now I feel alone.

He was so much more
Than just my father
My teacher, my best friend.
But he'll still be heard
In the songs we shared,
When I play them
On my own.

And I never will forget him,
For he made me what I am.
Though he may be gone,
Memories linger on.
And I miss him.
. . .The old man . . .

As a child,
He'd take me walking
By mountain, field, and stream
And he'd show me things
Not known to kings-
A secret between him and me.

Like the colors on a pheasant
As he rises in the dawn,
Or how to fish,
Or make a wish
Beside a fairy tree.

I thought he'd live forever.
He seemed so big and strong.
But the minutes fly
And the years roll by
For a father and his little one.

And suddenly when it happened,
There was so much left unsaid.
No second chance to tell him thanks
For everything he'd done.

And I never will forget him,
For he made me who I am.
Though he may be gone,
Memories linger on.
God, I miss him.
. . .The old man . . .

Can't tell you how sorry I feel Tony, I remember when I lost my own Dad and it is a bummer. You wont need us to say stay close to him.

Fast Bloke, what TI6GER said about those words is spot on.

Tony sorry hear your sad news.

I lost my grandfather in Febuary to multi organ failure.

You always feel cheated in these situations, as i did with my grandfather because he was a very healthy person. He even walked 8 miles around Disneyland in October on holiday.

He went into hospital on January the 8th with chest pains and never returned home.

Take it easy and spend as much time as you can with him, i wish i could turn the clock back and spend more time with my grandfather, but i cant

best wishes, Andy.

Tony,

I lost my aunt last year to Lung Cancer which had spread basically throughout her body, she fought on beyond the months that the doctors gave her, but it was the knowledge that she was going to die that hurt the most.

Towards the end, she was on high doses of morphine to take away the pain. I think though that the biggest relief from pain was that she and her two brothers (my dad and uncle) finally took time out to make up for the 20 odd lost years when they weren't talking to one another. They sat down and spent a good couple of months laying ghosts to rest.

I remember having no idea how to cope or what to say when seeing her lying in the hospital bed and she said "I don't want to die" and burst into tears. I came round and hugged her tight, but I knew that it was my cue to go as my dad was there also. Walking off into the corridor, I didn't know what the hell to do.

It is a harsh reality to face, especially as it is your father who has been diagnosed.

Life always seems to want to deal us a cruel hand at times, the only thing I can think of to say is make sure that the last months with your dad count. Say everything you want to say to him. Ensure that no stone is unturned.

I came close to losing my dad last year, so I can only begin to imagine what you are going through.
All the best to you, your dad and the rest of the family.

Fast Bloke, a truly lovely poem.

It came on pretty quickly (10 weeks) and he has 2 primary cancers (they havnt said about any secondary) but both lungs and no chance of cheomotherapy(??) as the pancrias is also cancerous
Just trying to sort everything out now, tidying everything up etc as the nurses will no doubt be round sometime next week....

Totally agree with Bros.

My mother in law died this time last year. Had a tumour removed (too late ) and go secondary cancer in her lungs, and, basically, everywhere. Nothing could be done.

She was in pallative care on the NHS, but was pretty miserable, as it was just a hospital really.

We got her a place in a really nice nursing home, with views over countryside and the hills where she grew up through a huge bay window. The care was brilliant and although she died two weeks after arriving, her last weeks were happy ones.

Sorry to hear the news, its hard

D

Feel for you mate

One of my best friends has just past away with a variety of cancers at 40.
Do what we all did for him, make the last moments the best moments. It is just an old cliche but nothing truer could be said.
I have lost both my parents now and the pain goes with time. All I have now are memories of long sunny days when all was innocent and everyone smiled.
