Check your insurance - if the stone chip is reparable, the insurance company may do it at no cost to you, if they have to replace the screen, then the insurance company may pay for it, al bar an excess.

swrt, cheers mate, i'll give them a ring now.
forgot to ask about the retest,
its just such a rigmarole(sp?) getting the car back to them again.
then i have to go to the bmw dealer (**** city) and get an exhaust bracket!!!!
watch them look down their snooty noses at me coz my car's 6 years old.
i'm gonna get my oily old clothes on and muddy boots, before i walk into the showroom.
hahahaha cheered myself up now!! thanks

If you're not sure something's right with an MOT (i.e. it shouldn't have failed) http://www.motuk.co.uk/ is a good site, it has the testers manual on there

That sounds crap! Where did you get it MOT'd? Even if it did fail, most places will put right the faults for you while its there without you needing a retest.
I don't think a chip in the windscreen should be a fail unless its actually a crack and its inside the swept area of the windscreen wipers.... someone correct me if I'm wrong?....

if the chip cannot be contained within a circle of 10mm diameter and is roughly 150mm either side of the steering wheel centre (can't remember correct size for sure) then it must fail as is the exhause if all the brackets are not in their hangers or supporting the exhaust if they are they to do so it must fail. but they could of put it right for you most garages would as a way of making a bit more dosh.

Christ, stop moaning.
I would imagine the testing station doesnt keep your exhaust bracket in-stock and I'm sure they wont keep a screen!!
I work for a dealership, Vauxhall franchise.. when we test non Vauxhalls and they fail the customer finds it hard to believe we havent a exhaust in-stock for his crapped out Fiesta. *snigger!*
You will most probably find the testing station will give you a free retest if you take it back within seven days.

Thems the rules mate! The tester has to fail your car, there's no two ways around....how is he to know you're not the ministry / TV crew doing spot checks, he could lose his MOT station / job / house / kids / dog.......
Hardly a big deal though is it, a screen and a bracket

try it over here - Ony DOT centres can give you an MOT. They simply check the car and tell you it failed, giving you a list of stuff that your local bavarian dealer can charge you 800 quid for. Then you apply for a retest, DOT charges you and makes you wait 8 weeks to tell you your tyres are now bald and you have failed again
IMHO our Department of Transport MOT people make more money for Mishter Brown than road tax and petrol tax put together

My motorbike failed it's MOT because it had no rear reflector last year. I found the reflector (removed when I cut off the huge mudflap on the back of the bike to make it look better) and stuck it on with duct tape. Blokey came out, said, yep, no problem and I ripped it back off again while he watched. Then I got a screw stuck in my brand new rear tyre on the way home. I'm sure you can imagine how happy I was. But, they're only doing their job...
