OJ...does it say anywhere that it is an irish plate? Is the V5 logbook the same as usual? Does the car have to be put back onto Uk plates when being sold......questions questions!

i bought a vil plate from northern ireland through a dealer for £59 + £80 transfer fee, it doesn't mean anything but hides the age of the car. It's classed as a private plate and can be resold, transfered to another vehicle or left on the car when it's sold

N. Irish plates are issued according to county (6 types) & major towns (Belfast, L'derry etc). They are the only plates in the UK that are allowed to have the Z & I characters as part of the letters.
It is possible (with an address in N.Ireland ) to re-register a vehicle over there FOC except for 6 months tax. Then register again in the UK for free except for the tax. I did this with a car 10+ years ago by visiting the the licencing office for the registration area concerned - KDZ 8116. If I'd been 20 seconds later, I'd've had KDZ 8118, so its possible to wait to get a "good" plate at an area that suits (KDZ was not dependant on my address, rather the office I registered at).
You cannot drive a car on S. Irish plates in this country for more than 12 months without re-registering. Register the car over there & you'll get clobbered for tax & insurance! Registration works Year|County|Next Number Up From Last Registered - so 03 DL 1500 is the 1500th car registered in County Donegal in 2003.

The plates you asked about "ZZ1234" are temporary plates used while importing a car from the Republic of Ireland into Northern Ireland. Owners of these cars have more than likely decided to save some cash by buying their car over the border. They are only valid for a finite length of time. Cars on NI plates XXZ1234 do not have to be re-registered when permanently moved to mainland UK.
