Would do, MR, but unfortunately:

a) I'm flying down, and BMIBaby are a bit strict on the size of hand luggage.

b) I'm only down there from Friday morning to Sunday lunchtime, so wouldn't have time (business meeting on Friday, then a ****-up/University reunion on Saturday.

c) Why would I want to take the bike all the way to Wales when I've got so much top-quality riding right here on my doorstep?

(edited to put the right low-cost airline )

Cool

I could post a picture of my bike, but you'd all laugh it's so old. Was talking to one guy at Glentress a few weeks ago and he said "I didn't realise they still make Mavic Suns". His mate replied "They don't".

The embankment might be cool, but I'd rather be getting muddy.

Oh, and if the sun's out we should be riding the bikes, not posting about them.

BTW, Luke, that bike looks very clean. When are you going to take it out for its first ride?

Okay, just for you guys, I popped out to the garage and took a couple of pics of my antique bike. It's not as clean any shiny as the ones above, but it's clearly had some real use.

Guess at some point later in the year (or early next) I'll replace it. Mind you, it does the job so well that I might just replace the bits as they break. Could really do with new forks at some stage, and discs would be nice.

MR - I know what you mean about self-preservation; I get very annoyed with myself these days when I bottle out of some semi-vertical rockface or drop-off which I wouldn't have baulked at 5 years ago. Having said that, XC isn't necessarily any less dangerous than DH (on the basis that basically it's just slightly less hardcore DHs interspersed with long climbs.

UB - we had the idea of self-build up here too, but plots are pretty much nowhere to be found in the Peebles/Glentress area. In fact, property's thin on the ground altogether at the mo. We've probably had a total of 10 houses to look at since January.

this is my fella...

3 years old now but still does the job for me.

Mark - how do you search for plots? Are you registered with any plot finder databases? If houses are in such short supply you would think the council there would look favorably on the 'self builder' in terms of PP etc?

oops, a bit on the big side, here's a smaller pic

Best time to buy a bike is at the end of the season, i.e. around September. Mine was reduced by a third, which made it worth buying.

I'll check your links out, thanks.

ub

BTW I have to ride it all the time, because I can't shoulder it

No worries, Andy. They were good reviews; I only looked at them after posting the links - wasn't expecting just a quick paragraph about a 2-mile track through a park.

BTW, you sure you couldn't find a bike any more black than the one you bought? If you ever go night-riding and come off it, you'll be hunting for the damn thing for half an hour before you can get back on it and continue riding.

SiPie: I know what you mean - the first red descent from the summit/viewpoint is bloody rocky and very rutted. It's even worse when it's wet. Having said that, the trail fairies have sorted out the final part of the switchbacks on the last climb up to the viewpoint (it was very rutted and rooty 3 weeks ago).

I guy who lives in my road, Derek, works on the trails, so next time I see him I'll pass on a message. When were you last up there?

Super_si: Check out the links in my post on the first page of this thread - there's a few pictures around the place.

I've borrowed a small video camera attachment from a mate , and the intention is (once I get myself sorted out) to hook it up to my DV cam, stick it on the side of my helmet, and do a video of some of the climbs (not too many - it'd be boring) and most of the downhills/singletracks on the red route. If anyone's interested I could possibly arrange a copy to put on a server somewhere. If the footage turns out to be any good I'll post some excerpts up here for people to see - as long as everyone promises not to take the **** out of how slow I'm going.

Single gear? Sod that. It's only the last couple of times out there that I managed to stay off the granny ring for the climbs....

Question

Whilst we're on the subject (well close ), anyone know a good on-line retailer for MTB clothing? I've had a swatch at EBC and Dales, but they haven't got anything that floats my boat Looking for padded shorts (but not the lycra type ) and a cycling top - prefer something with an element of rather than the grandad stuff

Cheers

Nah, once you have tried a full bouncer (been there) you will soon want to get back to the basics. Simply put you want to turn the pedals and the bike goes forward.

You don't need gears, you don't need suspension (back or front). All you need is something light, strong, easy to maintain, that doesn't stop working when you get a bit of mud on it and is easy to fix when you do stack it.

Singlespeed *is* the way to go.

Cheers

WD 40 usually works well. It helps them slide on OK but as it evaporates the grips stay put. The trick is just getting the right amount, try with just a little to start with.

Butkus beat me to it. Get some strong hold hairspray, and liberally spray the bars. Slide the grips on whilst it's still wet. When it dries they'll be solid as a rock.

Beaten to the punch - hairspray works a treat

And of course, you can amuse other bikers by styling your hair into a large quiff with the remainder

Washing liquid should come off with some water?

Chris - when are you coming out to Glentress next? I can't make it this weekend (I'm in Cardiff, so might have to go out this afternoon to make up for the missed ride ) but are you up for it the following weekend?

Did the red route in 1h40 on Sunday - my personal best.

Mark - aaargh! I was planning on coming down on Sunday!
I've managed to get a few people lined up to make the trip to Glentress, so really looking forward to it. Still, I can have a wee practice then and not look so novice when I'm next down

Remind me later (I'm off to the gym in a bit) and I'll give you the email of the other guys I ride with. They'll almost certainly be going on Sunday, so you could meet up with them.

Another vote for hairspray or WD40. Both work for me.

Did someone mention Glentress?

I'm trying to get a few pals to go down in a week or so. A friend of a friend helps design and create the runs down there.

What's it like?

I bung 'em in a really hot tub of water. They expand and fit over easily.... damned physics. Do the same to get the grips off too. Works really well.

MarkO is you man - he's been a few times AFAIR it was voted 2nd best downhill in the UK in one of my MTB mags.

There is a website which has details on the trails etc - have a swatch at this site for a few details. Give us a shout if you are planning on going down. I'm heading down this Sunday with a few mates and hopefully be back down quite often

Cheers
