I paid £12 an hour (in Nottingham) when I learnt to drive in '91.

I am looking for some driving lessons in the Epsom/Kingston area of Surrey. However, I have been quoted a minumum of £19(!) an hour in two hour blocks. BSM and the AA are outrageously expensive as well.

Does anyone know any independant (cheaper!!) driving schools in this area? I'm having trouble justifying the expense to myself.

Well they were £12 an hour when I learnt to drive in 1990, so £19 doesn't seem unreasonable.

Is it true about these new laws coming in that say you need to have proof of thirty lessons by a qualified instructor before you can go for your test? I heard it from a bloke here who wants to become a driving instructor as it's guaranteed income.

As for prices, I think you should pay about 15 for a private instructor.

thats actually not too bad, when you think of whats involved
1. use of car
2. insurance
3. instruction
4. fuel
5. wear and tear
6. there isnt a 6.

i paid £25 for a block of 5 lessons in 85. LOL

you'd pay £20 for most things these days per hour
eg. guitar lessons etc...

its not cheap in real terms, nothing is these days!!!

My Uncle is an instructor in Hook, Hants. I think that sounds about right per hour, it was £8 when I learnt in 1988 but that was in North Wales.

I think the "30 hours" thing is what the DoT ADVISE you have b4 taking a test, or so I was told. Rather like they used to say that you needed one lesson for every year of your age?

When you think of the abuse the car gets, the cost of fuel, the car's depreciation and heaven knows what the insurance must cost, I am amazed that there is any money left in that for the instructor to live on.

We've paid €800 to a local school, about DOUBLE the normal price, for my wife to take all her lessons in English, as her Portuguese is almost non-existent (her English isn't fantastic). She has to take X theory lessons, then pass the theory exam before she's allowed out accompanied on the road. Unfortunately, the Driving Licence Authority here have just refused to let people sit their exams in English, it has to be in Portuguese with an official translator. And they did have an official translator (who was apparently useless, I've seen the quality - and when you're only allowed 3 mistakes out of 50, and some of the questions are trick ones or ambiguous anyway, that's pretty disheartening) who has now left with no replacement in sight, so the school have said my wife has to pay for another official translator. We've had quotes in the region of €300 for 2 hours' translation.

She started to learn to drive last July. It's bloody April and she still isn't allowed on the road yet, unless we cough up ANOTHER fortune. And all this to be allowed to drive amongst the worst drivers in Europe.

My daughter is 17 in a couple of weeks and I have been advised £16 - £20. Also quite a long waiting list around here. I don't mind paying more than the odds if she gets a good instructor. I tried in a field but my heart nearly gave up and I was glad I wasn't a clutch plate!!!! David

Mine cost 18/- a go, and all of them, including the test cost less than £12.

A bit unfair to make people have 30, just OK as a suggestion if you have no previous driving experience.

Can it really cost ~9 p/hr to run a car? Seems a little excessive (yes I know learners are just that and tend to 'bump' the car a bit) this leaves a steady £10 an hour, essentially cash in hand for the smaller operations.

It may be £10/hour profit, but they don't work every hour. And £10/hour isn't a fantastic wage, anyway.

GF passed her test today, her lessons were £20 per hour. Not a lot when you consider how much IT consultants charge for browsing scoobynet all day

I think BSM are charging £22 ish???

The wife has just started to learn.....

Know someone that trained and passed advance driving with BSM. Staed with them for 6months and is now in business on his own.

Seems Much better than the £22 ish with BSM..... and you get the same/better quality as they have trained with the best (supposidly) are are trying ti run their own business and gain customers via 'word of mouth'
