Is it relatively safe to put a 40w bulb in a light fitting rated at 25w? What could go wrong?

What light fitting is rated at 25W??
Personally, I'd be very careful. The rating on light fittings is there to stop overheating. Light bulbs produce about 80%of their energy as heat, and only 20% as light, you've only to try to remove a bulb that's blown, when it's been on a while, to see how hot they get.
A40W bulb therefore produces 60% more heat than the 25W bulb, so could melt/burn/set fire to it's surroundings.

most fitting's will be OK with a 40w bulb. The rating is probably there to protect the shade. It may be too close to withstand the heat from a 40w bulb, so I would avoid it

It will be the heat produced Daz as the others have said. Probably not worth the risk.
