Hi All,

Ive never "officially" rented a place b4. Have found somewhere I like for 750 but wondered whether I can "make an offer" ie 700??

Or when you rent is the price the price and no arguements?

Also - who pays council tax?? Me or the landlord.

Make an offer ! I would say start at £650, and settle on £700.

yes definitely haggle. There is no shortage of rental property at the moment.
re council tax - probably the landlord, I think. Not entirely sure though.

I have never had the chance to haggle although i have said that when my renewal comes round in May that i will not pay an increase as for two years i have been saying it could do with a lick of paint.....and nothing has come of it. £700p/mth, £50 of paint, sure he can afford it. Oh and I pay the council tax, just got new amount in £1089 FFS !!! The binmen still dont collect the bags from the cupboard, us mugs in the flat put them near the road for the precious little things to save them energy. ! cant rant too much today, its nice n sunny just wish i was playing golf again like yesterday.

 

Yes I'd try haggling, always worth a shot. I had the same situation where the apartment was £750 a month we 'haggled' down to £700 on the condition that on top of paying the deposit we paid the first three months rent up front. So you could offer to do that if you had the cash lying around.

The tennant ALWAYS pays the council tax in my experience - because you're the one thats living there. And you'll usually have to pay all other bills. However, I 'think' if the landlord provides a TV he has to pay the TV licence - could be wrong on that though....

 

My girlfriend rents out her flat, we pay the maintenace fees and anything for the general up keep of the flat.

The tennant pays for the electricity, water, council tax, tv license, telephone (if he connects it) and gas (if we had it!)

It was rented via an estate agent and they did all the 'middleman' stuff when the tennant negoiated £50 off per month.

worst case scenario is that you haggle and he says no.... always worth a try.

(BTW - I was born to haggle. I don't remember ever paying the full price for anything. Tesco's is a real bummer though.. )
