Did anyone read Auto Express 5-11 MAr issue
about the 24 hours in Motoring in Britain. Page 46.
123,000,000 GBP
...turnover from all car, van, truck and parts sales in pounds sterling.
The most amayzing thing thing about this staggering amount of money is that it is only 18% greater than the amount the government takes from motorists every day in taxes.
104,000,000
...what the government takes in car related taxes in pounds sterling
This figure includes fuel duty, road tax, company car tax, insurance premium tax plus vat on new cars, parts and servicing costs. And with 10% of the chancellors entire budget coming from drivers, it makes you wonder why the gov is so anti-motorist.
28,767
...motoring offences prosecuted in england and wales
Guarding our roads takes up a huge amount of police time, resources and revenue, which is one reason why speed cameras are very popular. Gatsos release officers to get on with other duties, and in the US there's even talk of using CCTV cameras for spotting parking offences.
4,455
...smash 'n'grabs from cars
3,630
parking offences committed in england and wales
3,378
...speding fines issued in england and wales
627
...accidents where people get injured
274
...hedgehogs squashed
137
...badgers squashed.
110
...deer run over.
14
...birds of prey killed
9
...people killed on the roads
The UK has one of the best road safety records in europe, but every accident is one to many.
blah blah blah
The Governments focus is on cutting speed rather than encouraging better driving.
and last but not least....
Q) was it not the case, some time last year, that the public was told that gatso cameras ould now be coloured yellow and that the number of gatsos would be gradually reduced? is this actually happening?
A) It is true that there was a number of police areas in which it was stated that gatsos would be marked yellow to make them more visible. And yes that has happened. The rest of the UK will follow suit in due course. The idea that many of the gatsos would go was brought about by transport minister John Speller saying that gatsos should be placed only at bona fide accident black spots.
This made people assume cameras would be removed from areas that aren't blackspots, but police forces insisted gatsos had only ever been sited in such places anyway. So, not only are cameras not being removed, they are still on the increase!
there is lots more interesting stuff in here but I can't be bothere typing any more of it in.
