I've been approached by a friend who has asked me if the wheat/hops content of lagers can affect her upset stomach.

Now - I always tend to prefer the "ICE" lagers - I can drink plenty and not get a hangover the next day, but if I drink the same amount of normal stock lager I'll have a stonking headache.

I wondered if this was the same in principle for upset stomachs?

Weird question, I know, but I thought I'd throw this one out for the kangaroo court

Thanks in advance.

What's the cause of the upset, is it a wheat / gluten allergy? If so, pretty much any beer may upset her ... or is she just feeling dicey today?

She says she gets bad stomach pains that make her want to lie down.

These pains follow the normal hangover. About teatime, they appear and make her want to lie down and die.

She only drinks lager, usually Fosters / Carlsberg draught etc.

Thanks for the reply, btw, I just wondered if anyone out there had any idea as to what could be the cause?

Cheers.

Ulcers can occur at any age, for a variety of reasons, and if caught early, are NOT a major prob, so don't worry.
DO get her to have it checked out though, as other far nastier things have VERY similar symptoms.
Regards, and hope she's OK,

Thumbs up

I believe she can be tested for wheat allergy. Over 60% of ulcers are caused by a simple bacterial infection (helicobacter pylorii) which can be picked up at any age .... the good news is it's treated by a 1-month course of simple antibiotics. Again, there's a simple test for it.

Cool

BuRR, I have had an ulcer myself, so if you suspect she has one, get it sorted out ASAP.

Ladies shouldn't drink beer anyway - a fruit-based drink or a white wine is more becomming.

I get the exact same thing if I have more than a few pints of strong (5%+) beer in one session, severe stomache pains the next day that make me want to find a high building an jump....

put it down to an allergy to something in certain beers (interestingly I dont find this with bitters in general).

generally avoid strong beer these days and seem to be fine...

beer is good for women if they are small breasted, makes them grow.!! look at all the really fat men that drink its true though.

If i drink a lot and have a bit of a hangover, i do get real bad guts in the morn. Some worse than others and you can get bad pints if the pipes havent been cleaned through properly. Stronger beers make me worse, could possibly update the BBS with details in the morn after a stella evening tonight. !!

Burr

It does not cost to get it checked out by the Doctor, persuade her to get it done like so many advise.
