more importantly why doesnt someone fix it?
That was truly one of the british greats.
Is there a rich aircraft collector or restorer on this bbs?
Perhaps you could take on the Vulcan at southend airport?

Hi,
Yes it is the one near Newark.
I think it's just a tad past flying condition: but yes, it would be nice to see it "looked after". Maybe a quick repaint and a cut of the grass or something?

But why is it there? Someone must know!
It's a long story. But 20 years ago an aircraft factory in Newark was having trouble getting their aircraft to fly properly. In desperation they called in the RAF and asked for advice.
The designers of the factory finally found out what it was and told the RAF that their planes needed lightening.
Through a beaurocratic mix up, the RAF thought that the factory needed A LIGHTNING, so to help them out they send one up.
The mix up was soon discovered, but by this time it was too late for the aircraft factory. The failure of their planes to fly well meant they went bust and so could'nt affored to send the plane back.
So there it still stands where the lorry dropped it off, a testiment to beaurocracy and a classic **** up.

Nat,
No Lightnings flying in the UK because of restrictions on private use of fast jets. Nearest in the UK are restored jets that can do 'fast runs' down a private runway.
If you want to fly in a Lightning, you have to go to Cape Town, South Africa: http://www.kapstadt.net/jets/index-g.htm
Cheers,
Steve
