Question

That isn't a little bit sick, is it?

Anyone want to run a book on how many UK/US personnel get blown away by the yanks?

Charlie.

that's not quite right. A formation of B52s working together can cause a crater a mile wide.

I don't think even a nuclear ground-burst would produce a mile-wide crater.....

FN, although they said the B52s could create a crater a mile wide, i don't remember them saying it could be done with a single bomb.

Even a nuke would struggle to create a crater that wide, wouldn't it??

Indeed. But to make the same comment about a nuke was a bit eerie!

Depends if the pilots are still going to be drugged up like last time. No wonder the war on drugs in the US is failing. They're own air force pilotes are high as a kite ffs..

5-1 says 5 UK, and 30 Canadians.

that's a bit of a sweeping statement isn't it?

I've met quite a few USAF aircrew over the years, and they certainly ain't druggies....

Um during the accident where they vapourised a few Canadian soldiers, they were found to be drugged up. It was prescribed to them by the Air Force to keep them from falling asleep. It was said to be similar to Speed. How do you think these guys can fly for more that 24 hours at a time? I'm not so sure if they're still prescribing it or not after the incident. But if they are, my bet still stands.

it's wednesday and so it's pedant's day: it's the entire payload from a single aircraft that can create the mile-wide crater ...

pedantic reply: surely that would be mile 'long' not mile 'wide' - not unless they've learned to fly sideways...

Meteorites generally burn up in the atmosphere before they hit the ground. An asteroid could destroy the entire planet in one hit if it was big enough.

Question

Just how big are the bombs carried by these things? IIRC, the biggest bomb ever carried was the 22000 lb (10 ton) "Grand Slam" carried by piston driven RAF Lancasters during WW2?
I stand to be corrected.

The impact of a space object with a size greater than about 1 km would be expected to be felt over the entire surface of the Earth. Smaller objects would certainly destroy the ecosystem in the vicinity of the impact, similar to the effects of a volcanic eruption, but larger impacts could have a worldwide effect on life on the Earth.

Currently, approximately 200 terrestrial impact structures have been identified, with the discovery rate of new structures in the range of 3-5 per year.

Calculations show that a meteorite with a diameter of 30 m, weighing about 300,000 tons, traveling at a velocity of 15 km/sec (33,500 miles/hour) would release energy equivalent to about 20 million tons of TNT

taken from here

cheers

Cool

More pedanticity (sorry!)...

Meteors burn up in the atmosphere; a meteor beomes a meteorite when it hits the ground.

Largest crater on earth caused by human actions was Bikini Atol at 1/2 mile wide.
This was a nuke of 15 kilo tons.
and was called either the "able" or "Baker" blast (one was 10 kiloton, the other being 15, although the mixture was'nt quite right on the 15 so the 10 did more damage....)
the crater can be seen from space

ProperCharlie,

Yes Canadians do count actually.

Several hundred thousand Canadians have given their lives for the interests of the Allies during the World Wars. Seems us Canadians hold the British in higher regard than the British do us.

So nerr!!!

it is true that yanks do seem to have a habit of killing canadians and our british forces seem to kill Australians. As for the bombs making a mile wide crater, I dont think it is possible unless it is a formation bombing that is accurate but then it wouldnt be one mass crater.

But either way i dont want to see it coming !!!
