Human Shields Bottle It
#2
Almost all of the first british human shields to go to iraq were on their way home last night after deciding that their much heralded task was now too dangerous.
Two red double decker buses, which symbolised the hopes of anti war activists when they arrived to a fanfare of publicity a fortnight ago, slipped quietly out of baghdad on the long journey back to britain.
Nine of the original 11 activists decided to pull out after being given an ultimatum by iraqi officials to station themselves at targets likely to be bombed in a war or leave the country.
Among those departing last night were 68 year old geoffrey meynell, a former high sheriff of derbyshire, who admitted he was leaving out of "cold fear".
He had been summoned along with 200 other shields from all over the world, to a meeting at a baghdad hotel yesterday morning.
Abdul hashimi, the head of the freindship, peace and solidarity organisation that is hosting the protesters, told the shields to choose between 9 so-called "strategic sites" by today, or leave the country.
The warning folows frustration among saddam husseins officials that only about 65 of the shields had agreed to take up positions at oil refineries, power plants and water purification sites selected by their hosts.
It heightened fears among some activists that they could be stationed at non-civilian sites.
Mr meynell and fellow protesters who moved into the power station in south baghdad last weekend were dismayed to find it stood immediately next to an army base and the strategically crucial main road south to basra.
Iraqi officials said there was little point in guarding what they considered to be low risk targets.

Talk to the real ppl than the tree hugging upper middle classes.
Media tend to target the educated for ther polls rather than the menial blue collar boys.
Pops - to the point.

not just talk me thinks
Running away when it gets dangerous seems to defeat the whole purpose, unless the whole purpose is merely to raise awareness to the plight.

Fair play to them, at least they went.
I personally think they were/are fabulously naive but at least they got up and did something, even if it was a bit crass.
Should make for a very amusing feature film one day if the newspaper reports are even half true though

I love the fact that they made a big song and dance about going
and now when they realise what it means they try to sneak out quietly!
Im with Chiark, they knew what being a human shield meant and they should
have made a proper decision in the first place.
I saw one guy getting interviewed on BBC1 and they were treating him like a hero
They should get him back on and call him a ***** in front of the nation!

All those that want the "Soap Dodgers" reprimanded have of course taken steps to ensure that they're right there at the front line full of fighting talk.

Strap them, one each, to those rockets - should tell us how far they can fly then!!!
Bunch of girls, if they WANT to be shields then tell them to sit atop a SAM Radar Station when the action starts - see if we give a ****!!

They ought to charge the soap dodging hippies with treason when they get back to Britain.

perhaps we should charge all the compannies in the UK with treason who supplied materials for WMD to iraq as well.

hi there.
HG is in the house.
rayman: don't forget it was the germans who sold saddam the production infrastructure for manufacturing chemical and biological weapons. they like to keep this quiet and do not appreciate being reminded about it.
it's an easy fact to check - before the bennites brand this as untrue.
the funny thing that struck me about the shields is that no doubt the wagon train included a couple of intelligence agents who got an excellent free daylight tour of downtown baghdad...perhaps they all were. that would at least help explain their sudden loss of principle.

When they get back here they will claim that they have suffered post-traumatic stress disorder and get treatment from the NHS to help them through the Hell they've been through. Stood up for what they believe in my **** - when the crunch came they showed us what they are - fcucking lily livered w@nkers.
When they leave - "We're willing to lay do our lives to save the poor millions of Iraqi mothers and Children".
When they get back - "those ***** wanted us to die to save their people - **** that !!!"
To$$ers !

Don't forget the human shields were there to protect civilian installations. The reason they're coming back is cos the Iraqi's want to put them next to military installations which will obviously be the first targets in the event of war. Having said that, with the 'accuracy' of US 'precision-guided munitions' they'd have been f**ked anyway. They're probably all CIA/MI6 agents anyway, specially trained to dodge soap and hug trees.

guilty you say don't forget the context of "why" this all took place.
(plus the french sold him two weapons-capable nuclear reactors FFS)
if you ignore historical context (1980s iran & khomeini/iraq etc), you are unable to judge the subtleties of today's situation.
it's like saying WW2 was just hitler's fault. there's no context or backstory. it clearly wasn't. we helped it happen by appeasing him. lessons of history chum...
