How do I network my new PC's?

I have just got a new DELL laptop running ME, and a desktop for home use.
We have a file and print server at the office and I need to be able to log on to it. Server is running Win 2000. IT manager is on holiday and I have work to do!!!
Any idiot guidance appreciated as I only know about LAN's as far as the patch lead into the NIC
