OK, I've seen a few cars with black plates with silver numbers on them, and I'm talking new cars here.
I know that if the reg number is of a certain age then you are legally allowed to use it on a new car with the black on silver plate (does this change in september due to the new reg numbe regulations?)
The question is this, how old does the reg number have to be to do this? The reason I ask is that I might get MRW 312F because it's a cheapish dateless plate with my initials, as the blackbeast is a black wagon I think that black plates with silver numbers would look rather nice (the ZZ plates it came with were like this and looked very snazzy).
So, is the reg number I want old enough to warrant a black on silver plate?

I believe the car must be manufactured before 1973 to have black & silver plates. It is the year of the car not the plate which counts.
I used to have EDS 551B on my 1986 mini... never got stopped, but then the car could have been made in 1962.... don't think you would get away with that on the scoob

thanks. the reason I asked is that I've seen this stlye of plate on cars that should not be wearing them, eg; corsa's, BMW's, etc..

Its a good one this..
If the reg was transfered off an old car that was registered before the plate change, then I assume you should be allowed to use the black/silver colour scheme.
but I would check with the DVLA.. lol

It is the age of the car that counts. I know someone who tried the same stunt on a black Supra, and got nicked for not displaying any number plates as they were not of the required form.
