Hi,

I am selling my old car and have ordered my new one and need to transfer my private plate.

I understand that becuase there will be a gap, i need to put the registration on "retention". I have a V778/1 form and I think I understand that one. How do I apply for the old reg for my current car to be reassigned? Also, how long will this all take?

Any help would be really appreciated. I hate these DVLA forms!

ok send in the form and £125 and usually 4-5 working days later you'll get a retention certificate back, this confirms your number is being held for you. you should also get a new number to put on the car which the private number has come off, sometimes it's the old number (pre private plate) unless it's been given to someone else.
The £125 you paid also includes the transfer of the number to your new car - you must transfer within 1 year or you'll have to pay again?

Nope, no second forms. It's all in the V778/1. Time taken depends on your local DVLA office, service can vary. Mine is Chelmsford, and they are really efficient. Mind you, i've had my plate on seven cars since 1992, so they know me by now
