Right, Bear with me on this one.
I've nothing against swearing, I let the occasional () '****' slip out. But I don't quite get why people use blasphemy? . Some of the sayings are just downright stupid "Christ on a bike", WTF is that supposed to mean?
It makes even less sense when the people that use it don't even believe in God or Jesus Christ. And the people that do, wouldn't use it.
Does this annoy anyone else?

Oi, this is my attempt at a serious debate
I don't want it to turn into a religious debate by any means! I just don't quite get why the only people that take God's name in vain, are mostly people that don't believe in God

If you dont believe in God then how can you take his name in vain? Surely its no worse from regular swearing to someone?

Seems that any attempt to start a serious tyhread gets hijacked.
Yes I find it odd that people blaspheme. More a respect thing really. I personally find it offensive when people blaspheme, but don't get offended at any other word (I use them enough) It's kind of like using the C word in front of women.

As an atheist I blaspheme - "Jesus Bloody wept" for instance. I have to say until reading this thread I didn't give it a second thought. I don't know any overtly religious types and no-one has ever taken me to task over it. Despite the odd bit of blashpheming, I do respect all types of religion and peoples beliefs - one of my best subjects at school was RE because I found it very interesting.
I think in Britain, the power of the church is waning and christian people are either rejecting the church altogether or worshiping in their own way. I don't think I can remember knowing anyone that went to church every Sunday. Maybe people blaspheming is a side effect of the population becoming less religious.

The terms are just expressions and have nothing to do with whether or not you belive in god, christ etc. I mean, how many people really know who Gordon Bennett is?

Christ in the Nude
and
Jesus Harry Christ
are two of my favourites
Of course "Blimey" means "Blind Me" (from "Gor Blimey" = "God Blind Me"). Seems there's not a lot you can exclaim without it being offensive to someone....

But seriously folks...
It comes from H in IHS, the Greek abbreviation of the work Jesus. A greek eta looks like H, and sounds like E. When the symbol was passed down to the Romans, H was taken to be his middle name
(probably!)

They are just words.... If you "switch off" when someone uses a word you don't like then you are passing judgement on the way someone speaks... thought it wasnt supposed to be about that.

Don't see the problem.... But then again, I'm Athiest so it really doesn't affect any belief I have. "Taking Gods name in vain" is something picked up from the older generation. Blame them!!!

Firstly blaspheme is not about God or Christ in particular, it means "to use religious names irreverently" this is any religion not just Christianity. It's just typical of Christians to hijack a whole area in thier God's name. (nothing to do with Iraq).
Secondly swearing has been around since the dawn of time so Jesus who trained as a carpenter must have sworn and used one of his hebrew gods names in vain when he smashed his thumb with a hammer. Or do ya think he said Jings or "me H me".
Thirdly surely you must be joking to say that it's OK to swear but not to blaspheme what kind of logic is that. It's like saying its OK to abuse little boys if you then confess and say 10 hail mary's afterwards. All swearing is either bad or all swearing is either OK
Forthly we were alledgely made in God's image so our sense of humour must be shared with him so why is it that you guys paint him as some dull paranoid muppet who will be offended by a slight irreverant use of his name I bet he was reading this thread and loved the "harold" bit.
Lastly who do ya think said sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me, this is a simple paraphrasing of Christ's journey to crucifiction.
Serious enough for ya....

I`m an atheist and I say things like "Jesus Christ" and GOD!!!!" for the simple reason that it`s a lot nicer than shouting "****ing Hell" or the like. In my view, it`s a polite way of swearing, especially when people are around. And because I don`t believe in god, that`s ok in my book.
I know people wouldn`t rather hear any sort of cussing, but be honest, which would you prefer, "Holy Christ!!!", or "**** Me!!!"
I know which I`d rather hear.

Never really realised people got offended by it, i say God and Jesus all the time, as someone mentioned it is nicer then swearing all the time.
I dont beleive in god or jesus, not because I dont want to (it would be great to have another life after this), but for the fact I am a logical person. It is not physically possible for some being to be sat in the sky

It doesn't offend me . After all, people take my name in vain when they say "For Pete's sake". I never did understand why it was for my sake though
F*ck is quicker to say . But the polite way is to say, ****, or ****
