SteveYeowart,
Without putting down the "free" firewalls, if you are not prepared to spend a little money protecting your PC (and thus personal data, credit card numbers, surfing habits etc.), then maybe your shouldn't be on the internet in the first place!!!
For example, Norton Personal Firewall _plus_ Norton Anti-Virus is under GBP40 (or less than a tank of Scooby-juice) from Jungle.com.
If you value something, then protect it!!! If you don't know what you are doing, then it is worth paying someone who does know!

Boomer is right Steve, but that said ZoneAlarm is every bit as good as Norton Personal Firewall (I've used both) in the important areas - i.e protecting your PC. If you want, you can upgrade to the pro Zone Alarm for about $30. If you're new to firewalls and security products (which I assume you are), then I would suggest that ZoneAlarm offers a good starting point. If you outgrow the product, then fine, buy a more expensive one. Just remember by taking this step you will have more protection on your PC than the vasy majority of net users - it still amazes me the number of people who leave their PC's totally unprotected (or maybe working for the my company's security team is making me paranoid )

Depends what was displayed at the time of the attack. All attempted accesses to your PC will be logged to a text file. Some of the blocks could be quite innocent (i.e. your ISP pinging your PC to see if you're online) or something more sinister - difficult to tell without seeing the log. It is generally accepted that there are a lot of people running scanning programs across the Internet, so there is a good chance your firewall will pick up on some of these. Whether these are specifically directed at you is unlikely, however by having a firewall at least you know now!

I put zone alarm on my PC yesterday and have had about 12 attempted attacks. Are these false alarms or is their a big problem with hacking. Up until yesterday I did not use anything but had no problems I know of.
