Does anyone know of a charity that will take old 486's 14'' monitors etc. We have three at work and want them to go to a good cause.

be careful about giving stuff away!!

It might initially seem like a generous thing, but should someone get injured (for example, by an electrical failure), you could be liable.

Double-check (with your legal bods if you have any) before you do it. Maybe someone else on the BBS knows a bit more.

Blame the "trip, fall or accident at work?" brigade for this!

My Dads works for Help The Aged and may take these off your hands. Who ever you give them to you want them to sign a release form getting them to take full repsonsibility for the kit and towards any third party using them.

My missus got some from her work and gave them to a local needy primary school. As already mentioned, make sure a disclaimer is signed that they accept full responsibility for said items and you or your company are in no way liable should any damage/danger resort from said items.

Schools are normally grateful for *any* equipment.

 

Anyone in London hearing of 15" TFT screens getting destroyed, give me a call. We will collect FOC & take to a place of destruction...

Found out the other day that 10 17" monitors have been destroyed rather than donate them to charity. They won't even (officially) let the staff have them. All of this down to the litigious nature of modern Britain. Even disclaimers etc can be worthless if a decent lawyer gets involved.

 

Litigation has all but canned this practice. I tried, unsuccessfully, to get the company that I work for to give old computers to schools instead of paying to have them destroyed.

The horror stories that I got back regarding what has happened in the past are a nightmare, ranging from being forced to support the things through to being sued for various stupid reasons.

Tragic state of affairs. But it keeps lawyers rolling in it.

 

At one place I worked it was a sackable offence to have a kettle at work. Apparently a woman had scolded herself with a kettle at work and successfully sued the company. Understanderably, kettles were banned. Seems ridiculous to sue someone for your own clumsiness. If the same woman had scolded herself at home, could she sue anyone? Course not.

 

We're giving away our old computers to 'Pentalk', the idea is you hand over one knackered old 486, 'a person' revamps it and they are dished out to the farmers hit by foot and mouth, they then surf the net all day looking for **** , then remember that they're supposed to by emailing other farmers (seen as how everyone's not going out!) (NOT) and checking DEFRA's website to see what fantastic idea's our lords and masters have come up with today!
Have to say I'd never thought about the liability part.

Last place I worked the tech support people put the computers that were no longer wanted in a builders skip outside. They then sent round an email pointing out what was in the skip. Everyone filed out and scavenged everything and anything... talk about vultures
