Bitching about traffic must top Kuala Lumpur's league of petty gripes. But the city also offers the perfect antidote to traffic congestion: A blast around its Formula One racing circuit -- in your own car.
Hunkered out near the international airport, the Sepang F1 Circuit boasts great expanses of pristine tarmac. Since May, it has been open to all comers on Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons (whenever there are no scheduled races), attracting a motley crew of devotees driving everything from souped-up Proton Satrias to kit cars and executive sedans.
"It's about the closest you can get to a legal high," grins Alvin Ng, as he steps out of his air-conditioned Lexus after five turns around the 5.5-kilometre circuit. "Its just wild."
Track marshals insist that all drivers wear a helmet, and take a, er, crash course in racing protocol, but otherwise the mind-bending corners and lightning straights are just there for the taking.
And if you're worried about wrecking your own car, you can rent one of the track's own vehicles. Which might be a good idea if you rely on driving to get to work. Because if there's one thing worse than sitting in Kuala Lumpur's traffic jams, it's standing on the roadside trying to hail a taxi.
