How do you upload files to a website
#1
Ok, I'm an absolute idiot when it comes to this sort of stuff so I need a little help.
I've activated my the webspace my isp gave me and I want to upload some files to it. But how the hell do I upload them??
Do I need some program for that?
Stop laughing you bunch of IT's

If you need to get some files up quick, you actually will have an FTP program.
Go to the command line (DOS prompt) and type FTP.
You will be prompted to enter a site name. Your ISP should have provided this. Then you'll be prompted for username and password. Again, the ISP will have provided this for you.
Now type "dir" to get a directory listing of the remote site, "mkdir" to make a new directory on the remote site, "cd" to change directory on the remote site. Use "LCD" to locally change directory.
To upload a file, type "put <localfilename>" which will upload the file called <localfilename> to the current directory on the remote site.
Downloading is the same, but use "get".
To upload images, type "binary" on its own and press enter. This stops FTP from messing around with return characters - it tries to be too smart.
To upload multiple files, use "mput <pattern>" where pattern is *.jpg or something like that. You will be asked if you want to upload each file, one at a time. To stop from being asked, type "prompt off" on its own and press enter.
Hope this makes sense. Drop me an email for more.
Or use CuteFTP, or WSFTP_PRO
Nick.

I use good old DOS too.
Also, if you sign up for some free space with someone like Tripod (.co.uk) they have an upload interface that walks you through the process and does it all via the website. Quite good IMHO.
