As sad as it was to learn of the astronauts that died the other day, I couldn't help but laugh when I heard on the radio:
'.....and the relatives of the dead astronauts have said that they think space exploration should continue despite the recent deaths of their family members....'
Well no sh_it sherlock. What a stupid comment. As if we're going to abandon the whole concept of space travel and exploration just because some people died in an accident.
Its like saying, '....after the Paddington Rail crash, relatives of the dead passengers have said that they think that rail travel should still continue.....'
No, lets ban it because its dangerous and everyone can walk to work.
Sorry but their comment annoyed me aswell as made me laugh. It seems to me that they think that everything revolves around them these days.
How many pages of coverage did the recent train crash in sydney get where more people died than the shuttle accident. Or when a suicide bomber kills 20 in a bus??? Just because the space ship was worth so many $$$$$$$$$$$ its considered more important.
Rant over.

no actually.
(human) space travel still represents the absolute pinnacle of human achievement - and the most dangerous. that is why it gets attention. especially when it goes wrong.
for their families to still endorse something that has claimed their husbands, wives and partners in an horrific accident that left the victims in chargrilled, mutilated pieces is laudable.
and the last time you willingly strapped yourself to a hypersonic flying bomb was when exactly?
i'd suggest you are being dreadfully hard-hearted.

I seem to remembr hearing the shutle broke up doing 12K MPH, do not think a parachute would ahve been much help. sounds like they need some sort of jettisonable pod which is te cockpit so they can 'bang out' if they need to however ejecting @ 12K MPH is going to be pretty bad for you anyhow.
'tis a shame, they knew the risks and still went up so my respect to them, not sure if i could/would.

well the point about the very dramatic news value of seven people being fried in public view at mach zillion is probably fair ...
... if you're a picture editor or news editor, it's nigh on untouchable for the splash headline ...
typical of the guardian to be holier-than-thou and smugly "worthy". i s'pose they never covered the story!
