Childhood games (they were the days......)
#1
Prompted by STI wana Subaru's post, here are two of my favourites games played while I was a nipper.
BRITISH BULLDOG
Numbers:
At least 8 for a good game
Playing Area:
Quiet street or playground / field. Basically a large open area. Tennis court is ideal (without the net ).
Rules:
One player stands in the middle of the street facing the other playes, who are behind a line at one end of the street / court. They all rush across to a line on the other side. The player in the middle has to try and grab any of the other players running across and while holding them shouts "British Bulldog 1-2-3". If he manages to hold on then that player is caught and now has to stand in the middle while the other plays race past again. This continues until all player have been caught.
Summary: A great game with loads of physical contact. Bruises and scraped knees are common. Ideal opportunity to "accidentally" elbow an opposing player.
PODDY 1-2-3
Numbers:
At least 5
Playing area:
Quiet street or area with plenty of hiding places. Must have a post, pole or building/wall corner in an open area (eg lamp post) This is the "Poddy Post"
Rules:
One player is "it". They stand facing the Poddy Post with their eyes closed and count up to 100. The other players hide in the surrounding area. When the "it" person finishes, they have to look around for the other players. They can walk away from the Poddy Post to find them. If they spot someone hiding they run back and touch the Poddy Post and shout "<player name> hiding in <hiding place>". However, the player who is hiding, if he sees that he has been spotted, has to try and reach the Poddy Post first and shouts "Poddy 1-2-3". If the "it" person shouts first, the hiding player is "caught". If the hiding player shouts first, he is "not caught". You must be touching the Poddy Post while you shout. Play continues until all players have been found. After everyone has been "it", the person who caught the most wins.
Summary:
A game of stealth and tact. Can be quite a long game if you have someone who is in a good position and "camps" for ages.
I'm sure others have played the same, or similar.

yeah, i remember 40-40, and off-ground-touch!!!
a bit like "it", but if you get off the ground, you cant get tagged.
you'd probably get arrested for playing it these days!!!!

Poddy / 40-40 was called "Block" or "Blocky 1-2-3" in Hull ... regional differences, eh?
Now if anyone can explain the rules behind Re-alley-o, I'd be grateful ... I didn't even understand it when I was playing it ...

On the huge council estate I was brought up in, we preferred "yard-hopping" and "scrumping".:
Those were the days, just being in someone else's yard, at night, without permission, was the thrill, you didn't have to steal anything, or vandalise.
Especially scary if there was a dog involved!

What about nicking **** when you pick up your paperbag? selling them to the 'Big' boys aged 15+!! Collecting Apples and Pairs and getting chased by the homeowner? building dens in the woods and spying on courting couples! raiding the Council Estate to beat up the 'Scum-bag' gang? Not having so many 'PC' dicks about! tell it how it is!!
Oh, bliss, bring back the 40's!!

how did everyone decide who was 'it' ?
I can remember standing in a circle of friends and 'puting your foot in.' there was then a little rhyme said and whos ever foot the rhyme finishes on was 'it'
Can anyone remember any of the rhymes?

One of the best games was, 'Wearing the daftest Baseball Cap', the same game - come to think of it - as the Firemen are playing while on strike!!

PG,
Our ryme went something like this...
Ip, Dip, Cow, ****, You, Are, Not, IT.
The "IT" person removes there foot and they start again..
PS. This version of the ryme was only used outside the hearing range of parents or teachers.

We used to play a game called chicken. There was an area of the playground with walls on 3 sides. You'd get 20 lads in there with a tennis ball, one touch footy against the wall.
If the ball hit you and didnt then hit the wall, or it left the square, or someone caught it, you'd have to do the chicken run.
chicken run was everyone lined up in a corridor and you had to run through it while everyone kicked seven bells of sh*t out of you.
Bizarre, i remember it being a lot of fun, as an adult now i think I must have been mad!.
