Cool

I had a lot of problems with BTAnytime yesterday. Don't know if Freeserve use BT, so it could be related.

Guys ...... Whilst the good ol Dixons Group ( PC World / Curry's and Dixons ) are very kind and offer you a free CD. I would only ever use them as Coasters n Beer Mats.
As an Independant Computer Retailer, I am inundated with people bringing their PC's to me because they wish to change ISP ( Internet Service Provider ), but CANNOT completely remove all references to "Freeserve" AAaaaaagh !!!! There are times when the bl***y software acts like a virus and just refuses to be uninstalled.
90% of the time I have to format the hard drive... FREESERVE IS EVIL !!!

Dave I am currently using Lineone having given up with Freeserve some time ago. I pay £14.99 a month and get unlimited free use after 6pm and all weekend, all other times are 1p a minute. Lineone e-mail accounts can be accessed through outlook or via the web from any pc. I know it's not the best but I've found it to be reliable except on one occasion two weeks ago when it was down for a couple of hours.

Damn.....this feels strange posting something sensible and even stranger 'cos it's in a Dave T-S thread

Unhappy

Any other users had problems with it over the last few days - inability to connect to the server on either Home Time or normal Freeserve? - seems worse in the evenings.

Had previous problems, might be time to move ISP's - any recommendations?

NOT AOL.

Prefer something that uses MS Explorer and Outlook/Outlook Express for mail.

Live in the sticks, no cable, so has to be something that comes down the BT analogue line.

Would prefer not to pay a subscription but will pay a package price for unlimited use (as you know, I spend a lot of time on Scoobynet..... ).

Got Freeserve Hometime on my computer at university.

It's crap. Sometimes takes 5/6 attempts before it connects to the internet.

Cheers,
Tom

I currently use Freeserve hometime 24/7 and after 6 it takes upto 10 tries to connect, but as I use ISDN it only takes a maximum of 30 seconds until I can surf.

I do get p1ssed of as it sometimes drops the line and it has a 2 hour connection time out.

I used to be with redhotant for 8 months before they went under. Now they gave a good service.

I have now signed up with 08002go and I will get to see what their like in a few days. £9.98 for 24 0800.

OK - it seems to be our brand new PC (Dell P4 1.5ghz, Windoze 2000......)

If you log on to the PC from shutdown it will connect to Freeserve ok. If you then log off Freeserve but leave the PC logged on then try to log on to Freeserve again it just hangs on verifying the password.

If you restart the PC then try Freeserve again it is ok. If you keep trying to dial up it freezes the dialup connection box. So, it seems it is not releasing the modem properly when you log off Freeserve unless you restart the PC.

Some investigation required.......

Might reinstall Freeserve.....

Any offers?

Er, don't youi mean 'un-install'!!!

Best bet is to use a couple of ISPs - then you can choose which one each time.

I normally set people up with both Freeserve and BT Internet accounts (DO NOT allow them to configure the machine for you - always DIY if you can!).

One of them usually works...!

Dave,

I had a lot of problems with Freeserve a few months ago and some people at work recommended IC24.

I use BTAnytime whoch os £14.99 per month.

For that you get freephone access 24 hours a day, 7 days a week so no call charges at all.

Also they do not automatically disconnect you, so you can remain online for downloads etc. for as long as you wish.

I've been with them since they introduced the offer in January and apart from a single outage last week (which they fixed in a matter of hours) they have been great.

BT Anytime gets my vote.

£14.99 a month 24/7 access (that's just 5 gallons of petrol)

I use the ISDN link (I get the ISDN line through BT as well) and have never once had a connection problem.

Only downside is the useless and extortionate help desk.

John,

I think it's just shy of £40 / month which includes £13 of free calls. This is through BT Together which also gives you further discounts.

For that you get an extra analogue line and two digital lines.
