Relating to use of your PC.Are you allowed...
1.Your own wallpaper
2.To play CD's(music)
3.To play games
4.To install your own software
5.To watch VCD's
Or do you just do it anyway when no-ones about(ie night shifts)...

I AM THE IT DEPT- so I do whatever I want........of course all the "normal" people (read those who actually do something in the company) have to follow whatever rules I made up the previous day and some that I havent even thought of yet!

I do everything listed
everyone else has permision to do none of the above!!!
hahah no, i let people to what the **** they want, on the basis that if they screw their servers up,(yes, they all have servers!), they stay behind after work and rebuild them!!!
that seems fair!!
BB
ps my own server is like a car mechanics car!!
it hangs more times than a old washer woman.

Personally, I can do the lot as being in charge of the network has it's perks.
As for regular users, well I'm a nice enough guy to let them to everything bar installing their own software.
If the speak to me nicely though, I'll make the odd exception.
As long as it doesn't affect the network, internet or servers I'm happy. If they **** up their PC, I have Ghost images at the ready

I'm allowed all of those cos i'm in the IT Dept
However, i think the boss might moan if we played games when we're meant to be workin.
Play all lunch time though, as does he and my other colleague. Usually play Half Life online.

Yes to wallpaper...no to everything else...including internet access restricted from 9.30 - 12 and 2 - 4 (i.e. core hours) so no SN or similar...techincally we're not ment to join any bbs' or mailing lists without written permission from the head of dept.
Also - when using the internet out of core hours for personal use you're ment to clock out so you're using your own time...
...nice to feel trusted

Yes to all of them, as well as viewing **** if I want
During my time at Airtours, EVERYTHING was disabled. We had set wallpaper, a start button which only listed the main software, and Outlook for email. That was it.
You should have seen the hassle I had trying to get Fireworks installed for my staff - took me weeks to get it signed off

Wallpaper and CD's yes, everything else NOPE!
Used to be able to install what I want but no more!
BOO!
Internet wise - pretty much anything sensible. It is monitored but I have not been in trouble yet!

1. Wallpaper - Yep.
2. CD's - not really (but I have earphones , then again earphones are banned incase you can't hear the fire alarm)
3. Games - again not really, but Internet games are not blocked.
4. Software - officially no, but I do like my Rally GB screensaver and haven't been asked to remove it yet.
5. VCD - no.
Internet access is available to almost everyone, but viewing **** is instant dismissal and people have been sacked for this.

No..........
Not allowed to access any Pc terminals.
We have to ring a bell to go to the loo, then an area supervisor will come and relieve you,7 mins for a No1 and 10 mins for a No2.
I kid you not, count yourselves lucky.

The last set of policies I implemented would have allowed wallpaper, playing music cd's and VCD's (although I'd expect line managers to have something to say about that) and not allowed games or installing software. A fairly reasonable stance
Oh and I'd have to politely remind chiark that (presumably) it isn't YOUR laptop but infact company property so follow the rules like everyone else
