Question

I used to remember enjoying dance music, whether trance, dance, house etc.
Now it's taken over by mainstream derivative crap. I mean, can't someone engineer a track without a woman wailing some really bad lyrics ?

Where's all the piano tunes man ?

I used to follow music quite closely and buy DJ mags and vinyl.
There was imagination in music up to about 5 years ago, now it's just factory produced remixes or formulated nonsense.

Maybe I'm getting old

I was thinking just this morning how many of the same dance compliation albums are churned out these days.

I actually brought MoS 21st Century Disco 2003 last week as it was cheap. Compared the track listing on that to MoS Annual 2003 yesterday and it's almost the same.

You don't even get named DJs mixing the Annual these days - gone are Pete Tong and Boy George from Annual I in the late 80s.

It's pretty much the same as it's always been - mainstream so called dance music is ****e, IMHO.

You need to look a little further for decent stuff, but it's still around.

Have to agree woth Jay m A, dig deeper. The underground is still thriving, you just have to look for it.

And if you don't like what you are hearing, go back to the old skool. I still buy up old vinyl on a weekly basis, there's still loads of old stuff out there that you won't have heard

medders - From ebay and local record stores near me. In Maidstone there is a good record shop that sells new and 2nd hand tunes Not cheap, but worth every penny. Always best to get talking to the staff too. Many of them have got loads of stuff that they no longer listen to and are willing to sell.

Also managed to get a load of classics from a mate of mine (DJ Pooch) as he no longer plays them

Ebay is a great resource for them though, but some real classics can fetch a lot of money.

I got most of my stuff including some all time classics "meat beat manifesto- Radio Babylon, Beltram- Energy Flash etc for 10P upwards to £3 for a mint copy of KLF "White Room"- down at my local boot fairs and ones accross the country- in Brighton the sellers are pretty savvy and bargains are hard to find (original St.Ettiene Only love can break your heart 12" vinyl for 30P excepted)places like Shepton Mallet boot fair were a gold mine of vinyl! Look for some boot fairs in some rural backwater where little toby's mum will be selling his vinyl collection for peanuts now hes at university/rehab/gap yr travelling etc...

You could always try Hard to Find Records who have an online catalogue but u will pay through the nose!

Agreed, dance music is just too commercialised these days. Quite often when I'm in a record shop I'll look through the dance compilations and they are just full of the sh_t that's in the charts.

I was right into trance at its height in '98/'99. Some of my fave compilations are from that era especially the early Gatecrasher albums (black/red/wet)

IMO there is only one compilation album that's been consistently good through the years and thats the Global Underground series now at vol. 23 i think.

Commercial interests have ruined dance music. Ruined all music when you think about it. It used to be about the tunes and nothing else. Now its megastar DJs, Dress codes (I mean, dress codes, WTF?), and mobile phone sponsorship deals. Every modern act constantly goes on about "outselling the beatles" But what they neglect to mention is that if you wanted to listen to the beatles back then, you had to go out and FIND the music, compared to today when its forced down your throat at every commercial break.
Look into the underground and you will find the same vibe that was there back in the day.
You dont have to go to squat parties or anything like that, but smaller events, run on a budget with lesser known DJs mean you concentrate on the music rather than "Its Fergie on the decks, its gotta be good"
Its all about the atmosphere, not what you wear or where you are.
Look at the signature, you know its the truth.

Internet radio - thats where its at. Listen to Digitally Imported, both trance and Hard trance channels.

Fantastic tunes mixed together by great DJ's - Dj Dawn, Doboy, Dj Dean etc.

Look out for anything on Tunnel trance and your laughing.

Been listening to DI daily now for about 6 months and i still dont get bored of the stuff they play. The trance channel can get a bit commercial, but had it on all day today and they have done a good set of journey type trance - no lyrics, no wailing birds, just great tunes.

http://www.digitallyimported.com

Superb IMHO.

DW

PS - I have over 1000 12" sat in the cupboard next to me, covering EVERY top tune from 1992 to 1997 - have considered selling them, but decided against it - some real rarities in there.

To join the 'recommended links club', try this, usually some excellent sets playing

http://interface.pirate-radio.org/

Edited to say evenings, overnight and all weekend is usually live sets from proper DJ's

I used to listen to di.fm but it gets repetetive after a while and pretty much all the tunes are old. 6-12 months old, not "classic" old.

Soma FM is fantastic, but www.protonradio.com has the highest quality output of any net radio station I've ever heard. Absolutely Outstanding.

While we're on about old skool stuff. Anyone got the following tune on MP3:

At the start it had a **** load of bass and thru it it has a bloke saying "Bad boy,,, Come again".

I found one sort of the same called "Rhythm and reason - The Grandnational".

Good point Astra-boy- only problem is I'm too old for clubs these days -being old-skool enough to be there in 88 also means that I'm an old fart.
The only clubs I ever get to these days cost stacks of Euros to get in and you have dinner and a few drinks while watching a show!

geez- from ravening pill monster in a field to boring old fart out for a meal and show! v.sad but thats old age for you.

Wicked smileys by the way- top one, nice one- Sorted!

Been there, done it - overused phrase but true.

I DJ'ed for about 6 years, and clubbed for about 10 - dont regreat 1 minute of any of it, but you have to hang your clubbing shoes up one day or you turn into one of those oldies that used to turn up in the clubs with braided hair, smelling of sweat.

PS Anyone know what thr trippy tune was on Right Car, Wrong Car tonight?
