Question

A colleague of mine at work swears blind that one of the recent incarnations of the 3 series BMW was front wheel drive. The range was reverted to rear wheel drive with the introduction of the compact. He even remembers pulling his mates front drive one out of some mud by his house with his Land Rover and seems certain that it was the front wheels which were spinning wildly.

I don't think BMW have ever made a mainstream FWD car, certainly not within the las 10 years. Anybody able to shed any light on this?

I think he's talking bollox mate. BMW pride themselves on their RWD platform. I can't think of one FWD car they have made in the last 20 years.

Just had a thought.
If the front wheels were spining it could have been their 4wd cars that they made for a couple of years

He is talking bollox.

In recent years, BMW have only made RWD cars, and a couple of incarnations of 4WD cars.

As Mark said, they pride themselves on not making FWD cars.

Cool

If the car had something like IX in its name it would have been a 4WD.

BMW don't do any fwd cars only rwd and 4wd (a few threes(europe), fives(old e34 shape) and the x5). So sorry but your mate is talking from his behind.

However there is some truth in the rumour - in the bad old rover owning days (flame suit on ) there were plans to build the new rover 200 and the compact on the same front drive platform thus creating a front drive BMW. Thankfully they saw sence and kept the drive going to the right wheels, hell were even going to get a 2.5l weapon to play with.

AWD fancy seeing you here
