Royal Mail Standard Parcel Service - Claiming
#1
Bought a monitor, was shipped to me Royal Mail Standard Parcel - but the monitor is faulty. What can I do? Do I contact the seller for a refund or claim off the Royal Mail? The seller has told me they will send the certificate of postage - does this mean I will get all the money paid back (i.e. monitor+postage) or just the postage?
Advice please peeps!
Damian
PS - The monitor worked before it was shipped (or so the seller says!!)

It's the seller's problem. They should request you return the monitor to them and send a replacement. They should then claim for damages from Royal Mail.
No contract exists between you and Royal Mail (you have not paid them for anything) -- the contracts in this chain are (1) between you and the vendor and (2) between the vendor and Royal Mail.

Agree with Carl,
I assume you will have paid an additional charge for postage to the vendor. The have been paid for the carriage of the monitor so it's their responsibility to make sure it gets to you undamaged regardless of how they send it.

Brought 2nd from Ebay or similar by the sounds of it?
CRT or TFT monitor?
Any external damage to the unit?
If the seller insists it worked, they're going to be very unlikely to give you a refund.
Was the shipment insured to the value of the monitor?

Scooby Regular
IIRC, std 1st-class isn't insured; only Special Delivery or something like Parcelforce.
Special Delivery is insured up to £250, then you have to pay extra for more valuable items.

eBay = Yes
Type = CRT (no external damage, unit powers up but buzzes worryingly)
Insured = No, NAFAIK
Shall I just get a refund of a fiver for the monitor? This has been offered. The auction was won for £10.50 + £10 shipping. Should I ask for the shipping back?!
Thanks peeps!

As others have said any claim is down to the seller, as recipient of the parcel I don't believe you can even make a claim.
Standard parcel service includes compenasation up to £20 or market value (whichever is lower)for loss or damage, the certificate of posting is needed to claim.
First class post (and recorded delivery) include compensation up to 100 times a 1st class stamp. A COP is not actually needed but helps, particularly if you make a habit of it
Your choice if you accept £5, but personally I'd want at least 50% back. Depends if you believe the seller is being straight with you.
