Do Squirrels....

...have a homing instinct?
Cos I've got a whole family living in my roof & have to get a humane trap (you're not supposed to lay poison outdoors, apparently). I then have 2 choices...
1)Air pistol
2) Dump them on the common (about a mile away)
Certain parties of the female variety are unhappy with (1) - I don't care as long as they're out my life & my roof!

Put 'em on the common & then block the hole in the roof.
Chances are they won't come back & if they make it, will find the entrance blocked. They'd probably get run over before then
If you decide to kill them, then you're best off getting a postman's sack, make small holes in it, add a big rock + squirrels & drown them all in one go. Least mess & if you drop in a river, biodegradeable. Probably nicer to the squirrels as well. Just make sure the rocks are heavy enough.
Don't kill if Red Squirels as they are protected.

Carefull with squirrels -
They are basicaly Tree Rats.
If you get them in the roof they will chew everything including wiring, which can cause fires.
best thing to do is get RAT traps, securly mounted to a roof joist, then melt some Mars bar just enough to be sticky, then leave it and wait, then the traps go [with quite a bang] ge rid of the body fast as it will stink your roof out, burning is best.
Once rid of the squirrels block the hole and put some wire mesh on the inside, that way if they come back and chew in, the wire will slow them down.
To all animal loves.
I'm not crule, just being pratical, poison will get taken in to the food chain & may take ages for the squirrel to die.

I actually have a fondness for squirrels - red ones that is. Grey ones are generally vermin - especially as they've gone & forced the reds away. I have no experience in squirrel culling, but as a grey squirrel is basically a large rodent with bushy tail, the most effective way of killing one is to drown it - just like I've done with rats on farms.
And yes, I am racist where it comes to squirrels. Greys are American imports & Reds are true Brits
(That's the extent of my racism for the record)

Grey squirrels are classified as vermin which means that, should you be successful in capturing one it is an offence to release it again.
Red squirrels - quite different - protected species
Incidentally, grey sqirrels are supposed (by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall at least) to be quite good to eat.

I think I'll be going down PTMW's route.....
Barge thanks for the Mars Bar bait tip...or maybe Marathon (Snickers for the younger reader) 'cos of the nuts?
They are indeed destructive little (&^(^( - I caught one grey-handed chewing a drainpipe bracket (just for the hell of it - they seem to have a taste for plastic.

Please take my word for it - this is not a wind up. I had similar problem and someone suggested leaving a radio on in attic. Apparently they can't settle down with background noise. Can't advise which channel is best though. In fact I waited for our squirrels to nip outside and then put chicken wire in eaves. They are messy buggers though. Good luck. David

Anything sweet & sticky will work, but you need to get it to stick to the trap so that they will tug at it rather than it coming off witha quick tap.
Good hunting, get yourself some welders mits if you plan on getting hold of a live tree rat, and some marigolds if pucking up dead one.

I always feel a tad sorry for squirrels after listening to Ben Elton many years ago. Apparently even though squirrels kinda have hands, they have no thumbs - which means they can't w**k. Bummer.

borrow dave-ts shotgun much better chance off hitting the buggers than with an air rifle
p.s. make sure that you have accidental structural building insurance before trying this one
as long as the house if 50ft from a public footpath you should be alright
p.s.s. none of of the above is tried or tested!

Just a note on the council "pest control" thingy...
Lived in London Borough Of Tower Hamlets (to give it it's official name ) & we had foxes (plural) coming into our garden (such as it was - tennis table garden). We lived in a row of terraced houses back to back where somehow these little buggers had managed to infiltrate. We have a sprog who was just beginning to wriggle & no damn way were we going to let her out onto grass where foxes (plural) had p'd & cr@ped. Rang up the council & asked for help in removing these critturs.
"Sorry sir, can't help but I can give you the premium rate number of fox lovers united to get some advice..."
"What if I shoot them?"
"You CAN'T do THAT!!!!!"
"Why not?"
"That's illegal!" (???)
"So can I get dogs & men on horses to hunt them?"
"Weeeellllll, yes BUT..."
"You won't remove them?"
"No!"
No wonder foxes & other vermin have moved to the big towns/cities - protected by PC Do-Gooders

Me! Brought up over there, all throughout the "troubles" and never a problem. 1/2 Irish 1/2 English with an English accent to boot. Most people over there don't give a rat's ar$e about it all & just want to get on in life. Love it, everyone's so much warmer & more genuine & pace of life is more relaxed

What have I started here?
Well the trap's set but no joy so-far. I've laid some peanuts as "groundbait" so we'll see if they take the bait.
I like the mole-scarer idea, don't know if it'll work through walls though. I have no access to the space they're in - it's a loft conversion.
Failing that it's hole-in-wall time.
The ribbing at work is something to behold! (e.g. yesterday's Far Side calendar)

You can get rid of the squirrels using an utlrasonic mole scarer. I think Argos sell them. Put one in your attic and they just bugg3r off to someone elses house. Works for greys and reds. If you decide to catch them be careful. They move at about 3 times the speed of light and bite you a lot and its reeeeaaaaly painful.
SalsaKing,
If I hear you put another slur like that on the Irish I'll be straight round your house with a shotgun or 2 pounds of semtex.... Of course we all love the English!!!!!!!
