Our company web site was not working so we speak to the hosting company and the guy mentions something about DNS and says he'll sort it. That was Thursday and its still not working, does this DNS thing take a while to sort out or is he having a laugh???

thanks

Can do. Is it a .com or a .co.uk?

.com's can take up to a week sometimes, longer if the ISP is lazy.

Thumbs up

DNS = Domain Name System in case you were wondering.

CEM is right about the week thing as the governing body is American - Internic, though they tend to be quiker when you haven't paid for your domain

Was the site already setup and working or was it a new site?

If you move a site from one address to another, DNS changes take 48 to 72 hrs to fully replicate around the world.

DNS can produce laughable results sometimes. However the delays are more down to lazy ISP's. The longest period I've had to wait for DNS update is a day and a half. Most take half a day.

The time DNS takes to update around the world can be shortened if your ISP knows what he is doing - a few days before the change set the domain to expire regularly (e.g. 10 mins) so servers are forced to catch up and when the change is made they will learn the new records quickly.
