PS2 DVD
#1
bought 'HEAT' with my PS2, watched it last night.
The longer the DVD played, the more the audio lost sink with the picture. Stopped the DVD and started it again back at the relevant place and the audio was back in sink.
What the Fu&# !!!!!
Anyone know why this happens? or is the PS2 DVD player ****e????
One more question, I linked up the optical out and left and right speaker feeds to my AMP, my amp does not support Dolby Digital 5.1, is this therefore a waste of time until I get a dolby digital AMP and speakers? My TV is Dolby Pro Logic (left and right speakers through my stereo), I get better sound with this than with the optical out.
Spent all weekend looking for an S-Video cable, WHERE HAVE THEY ALL GONE !!!!
Thanks for any help.
Dave

Hi David
I've found my ps2 to be comparable to my pioneer 525 altough i must admit ive only looked at a few scenes rather than watched an entire movie, somebody on here i think it was chiark said dvd on ps2 was based on the warfdale chip so might be worth seeing if anyone with one of these players is experiencing similar problems. If your local to woking ive got a S-video cable you can have if you want , as for the optical i think it gives a cleaner signal, although this will depend on what interconnects you already use.

Firstly - optical output from the PS2 is PCM 48kHz for PS2 games, and therefore should be ok through your non-Dolby-Digital amp. DVD output is Dolby Digital or dts (depending on the disc and selected output format) and you'll get nothing on your amp if it doesn't support them. It will default to the normal audio L/R connections and probably not even decode it to Pro-Logic unless you tell it to.
2nd. Lip-sync problem - seems to affect lots of DVD players as well as PS2. I only normally have trouble on Region 1 discs on my Panasonic player. Not played DVDs on the PS2 enough yet to check it out.
3rd. S-video cable - same problem as tracking one down for the PS1 - virtually impossible to find in the shops. Try

hi guys, thanks for the replies
I watched The Matrix last night, and only when the film was very nearly the end did the lip sink go again. I'm thinking it might be something to do with the time the DVD is playing for (HEAT and MATRIX are both long films)???
Seems fine with Games, (although still get some slow down with Driver 2 and I only have Timesplitters as a proper PS2 game)
Mr Cookie, I've mailed you.
Cheers,
Dave

David,
I'm watching the Matrix now, kinda There is definately a greenish hue for the first 30 or so mins of the film.
What is this special lead that I need? I'm currently using the scart->3 phono lead.

There's supposed to be a greenish tinge in the matrix. It signifies when they are in there. Of course if it's still there when they get out then it's the green tinge problem. Try getting hold of an S video lead.

Watched 'The Big Lebowski' last night.
Lipsync problem started after about 40mins and slowly got more and more out of sync. pressing stop and play sorted it. No problems encountered so far with any games though.
Most odd!
I'll phone the PS2 care number tomorrow when i have the serial number to hand.

Hi guys,
The lead you should be using for DVD is either an S-Video cable, this consists of 4 plugs that go into the TV,
1 x red - Left feed
1 x white - right feed
(this might be other way round)
1 x yellow - video feed
1 x round plug that looks like a keyboard/mouse lead plug - this is the Super Video feed.
The other cable that I am using at the moment, is similar to the above (red, white and yellow leads only). This lead comes with the PS2, but you should not connect it using the scart lead. My TV (Sony Widescreen) has two scart sockets at the rear, but also, behind the flap on the front of the TV are the connections for the above leads.
Regarding the Green Hue and Lip-Sink...
I phoned PS2 Care line 08705 998877 to enquire about the lipsink, they are sending me some new leads. They seem to think that because games play OK the machine must be OK and therefore a new set of leads will solve the problem. I'm not so sure myself. I bought CASINO (class film!) which is about 3 hours long, so will check out the new leads (or Si's S-Video cable if it arrives before) with this and see what happens. Whilst on the phone, the technical chap acknowledged that there is a DVD green hue problem with PS2, but only when using the SCART socket. It's a copyright software issue apparently . If the PS2 is programmable, then I assume it can be fixed
NOTE: if you phone the PS2 care line, you will need the serial number of your PS2 before they will help you.
I'll take my anorak off now

David, chiark, et al: Did you guys resolve the green hue issue on RGB? I found this on DailyRadar.co.uk.
Everything's Gone Green! No RGB DVD playback for UK PS2!
UPDATED! We've the latest on Sony's descision to disable RGB DVD playback. Yes, 'anti-piracy' measures mean that you can't get the best quality DVD playback from your new PS2.

More useful info... the AV connector on the PS2 is the same as the one on the original Playstation, so just go out and buy an S-video lead for a PSone. Also, the 3Phono->Scart is not the same as a proper Scart connection using RGB, which gives vastly superior picture quality. RGB and S-video are pretty much the same quality IMHO.

I managed to get an S-Video cable, I think the pictre quality is much better.
SSX now looks alot better (awsome game!)
I watched CASINO last night, still no green hue, but this is not a problem with S-Video (only the SCART socket). Correct ?
I did get the lip-sink problem after about one hour. Paused the DVD for a few seconds and then continued playing and it was fine for the rest of the film.
Back on the phone to PS2 Careline and request a new machine I think. I'll let you know what happens.
Dave
One thing though, I turn off the digital out signal as I don't yet have a Dolby Digital 5.1 Amp (and then change the Audio out setting from standard to +2 as it is very quiet otherwise). Are people who are using the digital out into a 5.1 amp having lip-sink probs?

Greg,
I triedthe re-calibrate thing, but the instruction manual says that the DVD will start playing automatically, it didn't for me, and then it defaults to OFF, so do you have to do this every time you play a DVD?
Dodgy instructions for something that could be quite important.

Wow! I don't normally look in this section, but Im glad I did now -
I got my PS2 on the 24/Nov. All well until I watched '3 kings' DVD. After about an hour the lip-sync went. Well I thought it was the DVD and took it back (plus the film was poo)exchanging it for Ali G.
Anyhoo, I stumbled across these posts, phoned up PS2 helpdesk ,and they are couriering me a new one out on 15 Dec! Lets hope that one works.
Thanks to all for the info.

Yep I too have had lip sych probs with the PS2 it seemed to be ok after I stopped the disk and then played again or after it changed layer. I also had a problem with one disc freezing when it was suppose to change layer.
I have noticed tiny black specs on the screen particulary with ssx game but only after i started using an s-video lead
Sony are going to change it but id be interested to know from those how have had theres changed if it resolves the problem caus the guy on tech support said the driver versions will be the same.

I watched the World is not enough over the weekend, I'm trying to work out if my DVD disc is faulty or if it is the PS2?
I wonder if anyone has the same DVD and can try this out?
From 'cold' I cannot select chapter 10 at all, get an error. I can go to chapter 11 and go back to 10!
When watching the film through from the start, when it tried to play chapter 10 it stopped with an error. A re-set allowed me to carry on, but I got the odd mosiac and freeze during the film.
Any ideas?
cheers,
Greg

I have received my replacement Ps2 today (at 830am not between 12 - 3 as Sony told me)
I have set it up playing DVD's non stop so that I can see if it is working ok.
1st dvd gattaca ok (when I checked it anyway)
2nd dvd Fallen sync problems after about 35 -40 mins
Is this just before a layer change?
The DVD driver on my old machine was 1.20E and it is the same on the new machine.
So it looks like I am back to square one!!!
