Anyone whow what happens to a copyright if a company goes under?

Does the copyright cease, could it be sold on?, how can you tell!?

If a company goes under it will more often than not call in the liquidators, these chaps may sell of the intellectual assets just like any other asset. The copyright will then be owned by the company that purchased the intellectual asset. The same is true of takers/mergers etc.

If there is no selling off of these assets they I don't really know? It may well depend on the type of company. Possibly the directors of the company may own the copyright? OR if the company was a small sole trader (like a lot of shareware) then just because the company name is no longer trading doesn't mean he/she has relinquished copyright.

Basically I think you would have to look very hard at the individual company and material in question.
