You need one of those humane traps with a nice cheese and ham baggett in it,wire it up to the mains with a good earth and fry him. This is what some mate does when they catch em at work,i prefer to shoot em and get it over with quick.

get a big rat trap, nail it to a bit of wood, then melt a mars bar & stick it all over the trap, then set the trap, put in place & wait.
dont corner the rat what ever you do, it will come out fighting & will win.
or make it more happy else where, pour some creasoak [sp] under the shed lots & lots of it, then make sure that next door has some discarded food in their garden, once its gone pour strong Adult Male Wee around your boundrys, only male adult wee works, so each moring when you get up pee in a bottle

Don't try and shoot a rat with a co2 pistol, it's unhumane. I wouldn't even recommend an HW45 which is bang on the 6ft/lb limit.
This is how I kill rats, and I normally shoot about 200 a week
Get hold of a light, and rig it to an infra red sensor. Get a decent air rifle, with good sights. Put down some cat food and hide. Then as the rat triggers the beam BOOOOOOM. Seeya!

I doubt fireworks would do the trick, as soon as they see the sparks from the fuse, they would be long gone. Poison, traps, or shot IMO.
