Well someone had to start the thread..
So what do you think - good or bad move to go for a foreign coach?
Personally I don't think it is a bad thing. Yes, I would have preferred an English coach, but seeing that there weren't very many willing (or wanted by the FA) English coaches available - did we have much choice?
Ericsson's record is impressive, but my biggest fear is that if England lose a couple of matches, the press will get on his back and hound him out of the job - they've done it enough times with English coaches, so it shouldn't take too long to get rid of the 'foreigner'.... and we'll be back to square one again.
If it had to be an English coach - who would you go for?

Hi Chris
Mixed opinions on this one part of me firmly believes it's a national side it should be managed by the same as the rest of squad, but another part thinks it might be good to give a different structure to training sesion and the way we play in general.
And as for english choice repeat to fade <B>"There's only one Alan Ball"</B>

Is a Swede better than a Turnip?
Actually I think these days you just have to get the best man for the job. He has great credentials, but has never managed a national team, whih worries me a bit but I suppose you have to start somewhere.
What happens if England have to play Sweden tho?
Cheers

Might be a good appointment based on his track record, however I am of the opinion that England should be managed by an Englishman.
International football is the only thing you can get patriotic about, ie those representing the team are English.
Club football has been spoilt, years ago english clubs in europe had most of the english team in their ranks. Now with clubs like Chelsea/Arsenal/Liverpool trying to buy the best footballers worldwide, these teams might as well be Juventus/Real Madrid/Barcelona etc. Sort of messes up the heading 'English win in europe' etc when the 'english' team is full of french/spanish/italians.
He may do a good job for England but what would happen if England were to play Sweden in a play off match or whatever? And what about the national anthems that would be played.
No I think we should have gone for an English manager, only time will tell.....

I think it's a good appointment based on his track record. He is also being paid a substantial amount of money, with rumours of £1m bonus if we qualify for the 2002 World Cup. This alone should allow him to concentrate on the job in hand for the 5 years of his contract without suffering too much from our fickle press corps.
It will also, hopefully please please, remove all those 30+ statues from an England set up that looks slow and ponderous in all parts of the pitch. Bring on the successful youngsters from the U21's they are good enough.

We've taken the best man for the job, period.
Sure, if the best man was English, great, but he isn't so let's see how we fair with somebody who has a proven record.
The Press/public want Venables - if he had the job, within 2 weeks they'd be dishing the dirt about his allegedly dodgy business dealings, and he'd resign. I think that's why he left after '96 anyway.
Why are there so many foreign managers in the Prem'ship? Because we have a complete lack of decent English managers. The FA hasn't invested enough time/money in coaching for the last 30 years, which is why we're now seeing this shortage. Maybe Ericsson can bring on Peter Taylor to a suitable level in a few years.
"And what if we play Sweden" - well obviously old Sven will say to the boys "go out and lose, you know you want to". This just will not happen. When you are a professional coach you want your team, the team you have spent months preparing, to win. As an example, Steve Redgrave's coach is German - in Sydney he didn't say to Steve "Oh, go lightly in this one Steve, there are some German blokes I'd rather win". Bo))ocks - you lose your job if you don't get results.
If England start winning, we'll all wonder why there was so much fuss.

If we had an abundance of quality English managers who have proved themselves at the highest level then it would be a disgrace to appoint a foreign coach! But the only 2 people I can think of are Bobby Robson and El Tel.
Personally I'd have liked to have seen Venables given another go (and thats hard to say being a Palace fan) purely because he's the only one thats produced an England team in the last 10 years that were tactically capable of WINNING a big game with the players on offer.
But if the FA can't/won't choose these two then they had no choice but to look abroad.
I hope the new manager clears out the dead wood and builds a team that accommodates the new talent coming through, because we won't qualify for 2002 with the team Keegan left behind.

I'll comment although my support lies elsewhere
, I think he is as good a bet as you could have at this time, being English doesn't automatically mean he'd be loyal/patriotic or more in love with the job. The fact Keegan(English) walked away at what was a crucial time for the team proves this. I believe previous Keegan was quoted as saying he'd never walk away from the England Job.....

Completley unrelated post (but hey, I started the thread
)
Just seen that my fellow Palace supporter Justin has posted here. A big Homer Simpson style 'Wahooo' for Palace betaing Leicester a couple of nights ago. After the dismal run we've had it was nice to have a good win.
Cheers

Yes Chris, Woohoo indeed - how many teams will score 3 at Filbert St this season? KO the holders as well, lovely.
Trade it all for 3 points (well 23 actually) since its going to be one hell of a struggle to stay up IMO.
Back on subject, Peter Taylor? Hmm, not much of a cup record
