On the way to work at the moment I have to pass through a section of the M5 down to 2 lanes (lane 1 closed). It causes a bit of a jam!!!!
I've noticed its best to ensure you're in lane 1 when all the brakes go on, as it keeps moving for absolutely ages compared to the other 2 now stationary lanes. When this then starts to slow, gotta try and make way into lane 3.
Anyone else employ these tactics? Or got any other ideas?

nawp - speed of lane depends which one you are in.. whatever lan I go in it is the slowest !!
BTW you will find that the time difference in picking fastest v slowest lane will be about 3 to 5 minutes depending on length of journey..

Don't tell everyone!! It's great - as soon as the traffic starts moving - all the cars fly out to the third lane in the assumption that this will obviously move quicker normally meaning that lane one moves a lot better.

I saw an experiment on TV. Three cars entered the jam at the same time. 1 stayed in the slow lane, 1 in the overtaking lane and the other changed lanes as they saw fit.
All cars arrived at the end point (about 10 miles away) within 5 mins of each other

Oooh, pet hate is people that have to change lanes every 10 yards because another lane is moving slightly faster.
I reckon I'm going to see what reaction I get if I try the same tactics in Sainsburys - I'll join the fastest moving queue, then just as another one starts moving, barge over, and do this until I get to the front.
I'll let you know how it goes down once I'm out of casualty

On the M25 in jam time around Heathrow its quicker to stay in the slow lane and come off at every junction, go over the roundabout and rejoin....
apart from the few junctions where you end up going down a sliproad onto the M3 etc

M25 coming down to the dartford bridge, when jammed I'd come off to go to the services across the roundabout and up the slip lane at the base of the bridge.
Those that know this stretch will be aware that it's a good mile or so legitimate 'undertake'.
