My brother wants me to import him a pukka parka from a company called canada goose in - canada

the total cost of the parka and shipping is $550 Cdn, or £225 of our english squids.

How do you go about dealing with the import duty? is it an automatic process or do you pick the goods up at some kind of fancy warehouse and pay up. How much will it be?

ta,

mj

Can be both:

1) Customs usually check your package (oooer!) and you then get fleeced for 10% Import duty then a further 17.5% Vat on the total.

2) Goes to warehouse ie Parcelforce or somewhere and they fleece you as above

3) You're lucky and get away with it, happened to me before, but 90% of the time you'll get stung for vat and duty.

Which branch?

Have you looked at prices in the EU, they seem to be available in Sweden from a Google search.

can he not send it as a "gift" rather than merchandice and under value it there for if they do add vat and import duty it would be minamul. or does it not work like that?

You have a couple of options, customs by the way don't check everything, they just don't have the resources (especially this time of year).
speak to the supplier and ask if they will do one of the following.
1/. Put on the package either incorrect value or of no commercial value.
2/. Ask them to mark as a gift.

But do your sums, as even if you have to pay duty it's still probably miles cheaper than buying in Ripoff UK !.

I bought some records from a site in the US. The first package of 3 got stopped and I had to pay:

UK postage handling charge
Import Duty
VAT

The next one was sent on it's own, yet in identical packaging and got straight through.

Both appeared unopened and had a description of the contents on the packaging.

If it's being sent by a private individual and clearly marked "GIFT" it should get through.

For three records at $11.99 each, I paid about £6.50.

Postman put a card through the letterbox (I was out) and I just paid cash at the sorting office in town where they were holding it.
