I currently have the domain -

Normally your new ISP will take care of modifying the domain settings and all these scary forms. The NIC handle belongs to your ISP.

You have to tell your current ISP to release the domain to your new one. IIRC, the rules / wording is slightly different for .co.uk and .com domains. Something like with a co.uk you ask your existing ISP to allow your new one to modify the settings, whereas with a .com you have to ask them to release it.

Lee or Steve (ITWW) should be able to tell you more.

My ISP is aol and the domain has absolutely nothing to do with them. I registered it myself through networksolutions. I am just now fully sure how to fill out the InterNIC forms. I tried before but nothing ever got done then i got a mate to do it, and it took around 1 day to fully go through. '

The host modification template is one of those scary looking forms that seem to be made to put people off. But you have all the info you need.

Just enter the stuff you wish to change, which will be the name server records.

Once you have completed the form changes you will get an email sent to the address with which you registered the domain. Again it will look scarier than it should but you just need to click reply change a line in there to accept the change and all is done.

It will take up to 24 hours after you get the acknowledgement for the dns change to propagate across the net so don't panic if nothing changes immediately.

Oh and Chris you are right, .co.uk is different you have to ask the isp to change the tag to the new isp, why do we have to have different rules I do not know but i think it's due to .co.uk being a second level domain and .com a top level.

I'm just a little thick about the host form:
what i was wondering is
NS1.MADHOSTS.COM 209.145.62.50 - is this the hostname?
NS2.HISPEED.NET 209.145.61.254 - is this the host ip address then?

I though NS1.MADHOSTS.COM - was the host name and 209.145.62.50 was the ip address.
NS2.HISPEED.NET 209.145.61.254 - then i'm left with that and have no idea what to do with it, can anyone please help?

You always should have at least two nameservers for any domain, if one goes down then you have the other to provide access for any visiting users or email etc.

So... you have a primary nameserver and a secondary nameserver.

For you in this instance

The hostname of your primary nameserver is NS1.MADHOSTS.COM
It's ip address is 209.145.62.50

The hostname of your secondary nameserver is
NS2.HISPEED.NET
and it's ip address is 209.145.61.254

Once you have these nameservers registered for your domain with network solutions you need to get the administrator of each of these nameservers to set up the domain records for you. They'll know how to do that according to what services they are providing for you. This can actually be done at any time they just won't do anything until network solutions set up their bit.

I didn't realise you'd been brave enough to register the domain yourself - I always let somebody else fill in all the forms and do the leg work.

When I said ISP, I meant the company providing the hosting services rathern than your dial-up provider.

Have you managed to sort it out?

Thanks for all the help - i really appreciate it! . I've done this before but whenever i do it, i never hear anything from them and i don't know why.

Chris- Yeah - I registered the domain a few years ago , not exactly sure when as i can't remember. I've had a few different hosts but they have always sorted it from me and take money out of what i'm paying for costs for there time. In this case it's a mate and hes very very busy with his company and he told me to do it (not to bad seeing as i'm not paying a thing for it) . Anyway thanks for all the help. Ian

I think you have filled in the wrong part of the form.

The area you need to change is
7a and 7b and 8a and 8b

It should look like this...

Prime Name Server
7a. Primary Server Hostname....: NS1.MADHOSTS.COM
7b. Primary Server Netaddress..: 209.145.62.50

Secondary Name Server(s)
8a. Secondary Server Hostname..: NS2.HISPEED.NET
8b. Secondary Server Netaddress:
209.145.61.254

looks like you've got it sussed now. Lancat is correct on the primary/2ndary dns..

network solutions are a nightmare as they can take ages moving stuff. plus they aint cheap either !

I'm about to move my server which means a change in IP which means a change of EVERY domain on the box we'll have to see what mess the registrars can make of it

Ok still puzzled now lol ,
I re-sent the host form i had above but just took out the secondry server dns. I've had no e-mails back yet but i am thinking about e-mailing them anyway as i doubt i'll hear from them if i don't.
To the next part, Lancat- i couldn't find the host form that you mentioned above, all the ones on network solutions are just of the ones i have described and i've looked again and can't seem to find it. should i just pay someone to do it all for me? lol
Lee- How do they go about charging me? will they charge me for moving it? Good luck in moving your server.. you'll probably have everything sorted a week and i'll still be at this stage next Millenium..

Can you e-mail me the form that you are using as it sounds like it maybe different to what I am used to using?

Also I maybe wrong, but I cant remember if network solutions are the one who you have to send a request from a specific e-mail address? It may have to be modified by an address at thecoolhost.com!

Andy- Yeah , i'll e-mail it to you in abit.
Anyone can do it, but anything that happens has to go through me as i have to reply to them from my e-mail address and authorise everything.
I've sent an e-mail to network solutions telling them what i want to do , asking if theres anything else to do, and also telling them to just do it. Quite blunt but it's annoying after a while

I used to work for and ISP and I had to mess around with domains daily! Network Solutions used to be the bein of my life when registering (or not as the case maybe) domains! Ahh well never again!!

They are still less than good. I have had a domain argument ongoing with them for 2 months now.

The other registrars have proved no better tho'.

Money and old rope come to mind.
