Common Rail Diesel
OK here we go then ....
Fuel injectors can have a single seperate fuel line each from a mechanical distribution fuel pump mechanicaly driven by the engine delivering a measured amount of fuel depending on throttle position ..... or they can have a common rail .... here each injector is directly conected to a pressurised fuel rail and each injector has a solenoid valve atatched between injector and rail.. the rail is pumped full of fuel ( under pressure by a lift type pump ) and electronic pulses open the solenoid and delvers fuel to the cylinder, the duration of flow depending on throttle position. The ford efi system is of the presurised rail type and the older cvh in the xr3i is an example of the "distribution" type.
Simply one is a mechanical and the other an electronic system, so better performance
Quick crude way of explaining it .... hope I got it right !!!

Cheers Kev,
I have been wondering about that for a while!! I don't need a too technical explantion as I probably wouldn't understand it anyway!!!!
I did see something somewhere about a Caterham or Westfield that had got a turbo Diesel engine in it...went quite well apparently....although the sound doesn't quite tug the heart strings like a petrol powered motor!!
