There's a joke about a golfer with a one-iron continually having lightning strikes hit the ground/trees/etc. near him, but not actually hit him.

The punchline goes "not even God can hit a one-iron". I think there's a message in there...

PS: Nevada Bob's or American Golf Discount would also be a good bet.

ok - i know nothing about golf whatsoever

But my dad wants a driving iron for christmas - he's happy with a low priced one (apparently) a "controller driving iron" 12.5 degree, but he's not totally clued up...

So, two questions to the collective system that's scoobynet

a) is this a "good" driving iron in this class - are there better alternatives ?

b) where's the best place to buy clubs from ? (South East, or on the net...)

er... thanks I hope...

Got JJB Sports over your way?
They've got a reasonable selection.

Go to your local golf professinal and ask his advice.

He'll ask about your dad's game/swing/h-cap etc and advise you (hopefully) on the best solution.

Driving irons can be difficult to play, and your dad may be better off with a decent 3/5 wood.

CM,as has been said before, Agolf / NBobs / JJB have reasonably priced selections. One assumes (and I stand a risk of being shouted at here) that he's not "that good" at the great game ? The reason I say that is a) it's a bally difficult club to hit, and b) if he were pretty good, I'd suggest he'd know what club / make he wanted ??

Perhaps surprise him with a couple of lessons at his club and let him buy the driving iron in the sales ??????

thanks all

he's just got back into it after about 25 years of not touching a club. As for good, he hasnt sorted out his par yet, but he played with someone the other week who is a 22 and matched them stroke for stroke. I've no idea if thats good, bad or indifferent ?

mmm... from what he said I thought that modern driving irons were actually easier to use than woods, but you lot dont seem to think so.

i can see a WH Smith book token on the cards...

To be honest he'd be better off trying different ones out. It is definitely not a club I would recommend to anyone other than an experienced golfer with a consistent swing.
If you want a pressie that will be the most use to him, get him a set of lessons from the local pro (individual lessons are best, but group lessons are a good starter too if you want to spend a bit less)

[Oh and the "Only God can hit a 1-iron" was attributed to Lee Trevino}

Thumbs up

You can usually buy gift vouchers or credits for his club pro shop. Why not do that, then he can decide what he wants to buy, try it out too, but it'll be a bit more thoughtful than just giving him cash?

A Controller driving iron is a cross between a wood and an iron, supposed to be easy to hit - not to be confused with a 1 iron (as mentioned, impossible to hit!).

Dunno how much they are though, probably about £30?

Looked up the Controller driving iron on the web and it looks like it would cost about £60-£80. Seems to have got good reviews and would probably suit your dad.

Alternatively have a look at the Hippo club here \http://shop.american-golf-discount-online-golf-shop.co.uk/online_shop/americangolf.html seems to be a similar thing and Hippo are good value budget clubs.

The controller is a non brand club which works reasonably well, although it is a bit expensive when you can get as good for half the price ie £30
Mail me if you need anymore help
