Does having my hot water get hotter and hotter with the central heating on likely to mean that the 3 way diverter valve is broken? I notice that when moving the diverter valve's lever there is no resistance in either direction. Can you just turn off the electricity and swap the whole valve?

The small motor inside the diverter unit has probably burnt out.
I replaced mine last year. It's a simple job. Get yourself a replacement from Wicks.

Brendon, More than likely the valve's the prob mate.

Should be a silver box on the valve yeah, this is the motor head.

I take it you've had the cover off it and can see the motor??

What to do is have a look on the BASE of the silver box. If there are 2 x Brass screws DIAGONALLY from each other you can buy a new HEAD only BUT if there are 4 x screws (One each corner) you'll need a whole valve

No resistance to lever suggests something is knackered in the valve. Apart from Bee's comments, it is possible that the actual valve itself has seized in which case you will need to change it all rather than just the actuator. Much more likely it is just the motor/actuator, IMHO.

Whole new valve = either shut down system and pipe freeze, or shut down system and drain it Actuator only = pull the right fuse and takes 10 minutes.

I got away with actuator only, and was pleased about that!
