Minolta Dimage 7 vs Dimage 7i
#3
As my mum is going to America for xmas I've decided to let her pick me up a Dimage 7/7i camera
The dimage 7 works out at £397 and the dimage 7i is £381.
I thought the 7i was better than the 7, am I wrong? Which one should I get her to buy?
Cheers.

Rik I have a DiMage 7 and it does everything I could want and more, has 5.2 Megapixels and is fully auto to fully manual.
At less than £400 I would definitely recommend it. I paid £577 for mine as a Jessop used camera but it arrived un-used.
As I can't really think of anything that's missing from it, I can't think how the fuctions of the i or the H would benefit anyone other than a serious hobby snapper or semi pro.
But then these guys would probably buy an SLR bodied digi anyway (£2000+!!).

I've got the 7i, had it for about 6 months. When we ordered, it was on VERY special offer from wifey's catalogue, and brought the price down to well below then high street prices. Funny thing was, the catalogue said "Dimage 7i", but the photo on the page was of a "Dimage 7". They didn't really know which it would be when it came, as it was coming direct from Minolta.
Anyway, I went onto the Minolta website, and downloaded, and printed off, the FULL specifications for each camera, (ran to 5 pages each!), and since they were listed in the same order, I was able to do a line by line comparison to see what changed.
The answer was very little: lens focal lengths, (slightly), faster maximum shutter speed, and that was about it.
Didn't make any difference to me which one I got, and the 7i works great.
Invest in the Minolta case for it, available cheap from www.digitalfirst.co.uk.
Be careful what extra compactflash cards you use. Mine didn't like a cheap one I bought from the same place, but they upgraded it to a better one by return of post, so no prob there.
BTW: the minolta helpline was very good when I had probs with the card.
